Pepper price today May 20 in the world market
In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Community (IPC) has updated the prices of all types of pepper traded in the international market on May 19 (local time) as follows:
Indonesia's Lampung black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $7,301 per tonne. Meanwhile, Muntok white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $10,051 per tonne.
Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,800/mt.
Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,200/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price remained stable from yesterday at $11,900/ton.
Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of 500 gr/l black pepper in Vietnam reached 6,700 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,800 USD/ton.
Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,700/ton.
Domestic pepper prices remain stable, but experts say the current price level is high as post-harvest supply begins to decline. Demand from major markets such as the Middle East and Europe is forecast to increase sharply in the second quarter of 2025, putting further pressure on supply.
However, the domestic market is still quite quiet, weak purchasing power has prevented prices from increasing as expected. It is forecasted that from now until the end of the year, the balance of supply and demand will continue to be the key factor regulating the market. In the context of a global supply shortage, pepper prices may recover in the medium and long term.
In the short term, domestic pepper prices are expected to remain high, fluctuating around 150,000 - 152,000 VND/kg. Farmers should closely monitor weather developments and factors affecting productivity to develop reasonable and effective production plans.
The Indonesian government is working to improve the country’s position in the global spice industry by promoting the development of key crops. In 2025, the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture has identified pepper as the focus of its spice development program.
Ir. Baginda Siagian, Director of Short-term and Perennial Crops at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, said that although the government still supports major spices such as pepper, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and vanilla, due to budget constraints, this year it will focus on developing new growing areas for pepper.
The expansion of pepper cultivation areas will be implemented in five high-potential provinces, namely Bangka Belitung, Lampung, West Kalimantan and South Sulawesi. However, technical support and cultivation guidance for other spices will be maintained to stabilize productivity.
