According to the latest report from Ptexim, consumer demand is recovering in major markets in Europe and Asia. However, China still maintains a slow purchasing trend.
Although pepper imports from Vietnam to China in the first quarter of 2025 increased by nearly 88% compared to the same period last year, this level is still much lower than in 2023, only about 7.8%. This shows that China is buying in a strategic direction, not out of urgent need.
In the US market, positive signals came from long-term orders for the third and fourth quarters of this year, reflecting confidence in market stability and concerns about the risk of future supply shortages.
However, Vietnamese exporters are quite cautious and do not want to sign long-term contracts because they expect pepper prices to continue to increase in 2025 and 2026.
On April 28, the Ministry of Industry and Trade held a conference on trade promotion with Vietnamese trade offices abroad. At the event, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, Trade Counselor and Head of the Vietnamese Trade Office in the US, said that Vietnam's exports to the US in the first quarter reached 31.4 billion USD, up 22% over the same period. In contrast, Vietnam imported 4.1 billion USD from the US, up 21%. This figure shows that the two economies have a complementary trade relationship rather than direct competition.
Although the Vietnam-US trade relationship is still facing some challenges related to tariffs, large US corporations such as Walmart, Target, Costco or HomeDepot still believe in the ability of the two sides to reach a new trade agreement.
Some of these businesses are considering participating in the event Connecting the International Supply Chain - Vietnam International Sourcing & Ho Chi Minh City Export Forum 2025 scheduled to take place next September, organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. According to Mr. Hung, there are currently many positive signals in the negotiation process related to taxes between the two countries.
