At this time, the price of 30 shrimp/kg is about 110,000 VND; 100 shrimp/kg is only about 70,000 VND, a decrease of nearly 50,000 VND/kg compared to 2 months ago, while the price of aquatic feed is continuously increasing.
With the above price, shrimp farmers in Ben Tre do not make a profit, even for shrimp ponds with high loss rate, fishermen suffer heavy losses. The reason for the sharp decrease in raw shrimp price is that shrimp exporting enterprises are facing difficulties, slow output, increased storage costs and at the same time, large shrimp output is being harvested.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ben Tre, since the beginning of the year, the area of high-tech shrimp farming in the province has reached 320 hectares out of the total 500 hectares planned for this year. This brings the total area of high-tech shrimp farming in the province to more than 3,430 hectares, with an estimated shrimp output of 160,188 tons.
With the current unstable and low shrimp prices, it is very difficult for fishermen to expand their acreage. Mr. Vo Van Quan, Vice Chairman of Binh Dai District People's Committee, said that shrimp has entered the main season, and fishermen are currently preparing conditions for sowing and investing in high-tech farming.
“High-tech shrimp farming is the main and sustainable model, while traditional farming is more risky. The disadvantage for farmers today is that shrimp prices are very low, when shrimp farming is very hard, to have a batch of shrimp, people have to lose sleep, the cost is very high but the price is very cheap,” Mr. Quan informed.
