Oil prices rose nearly 3% on Monday after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+) kept production growth in July unchanged at 411,000 barrels per day, in line with previous months and lower than some market participants had feared.
Brent crude futures rose 58 cents, or 0.9%, to $65.21 a barrel at 13:07 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 67 cents, or 1.1%, to $63.19 a barrel.
“Risk premiums have returned to oil prices after the weekend’s attacks deep into Russian territory from Ukraine. But more important for actual production is the standoff between the US and Iran over uranium enrichment,” said Harry Tchilinguirian, an analyst at Onyx Capital Group.
Over the weekend, Ukraine and Russia escalated their conflict with one of the biggest drone battles since the start of the conflict, including the explosion of a Russian highway bridge as a passenger train passed over it and an attack on nuclear-capable bombers deep in Siberia.
Meanwhile, an Iranian diplomat said Iran is preparing to reject a US proposal to end the decades-long nuclear dispute, as it neither addresses Tehran's interests nor softens Washington's stance on uranium enrichment.
If nuclear talks fail, this could mean sanctions on Iran will remain in place, limiting supplies from Iran and supporting oil prices.
Another supportive factor was a weaker US dollar. The dollar index held near a six-week low as investors weighed the outlook for President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and the potential for them to hurt growth and spur inflation.
A weak US dollar makes dollar-priced commodities, such as oil, cheaper for holders of other currencies.
“Crude oil prices continue to rise, supported by the weakening US dollar,” said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.
In addition, supply concerns increased as wildfires in Alberta, Canada, have affected more than 344,000 barrels per day of oil sands output, equivalent to about 7% of the country's total crude oil production, according to Reuters calculations.
Oil prices could get further support if forecasts of a decline in US crude inventories materialize in the upcoming series of weekly supply reports.
