Oil prices fell, retreating from earlier gains after the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned of weak demand from China. At the same time, the market also watched the possibility of new US sanctions to limit Russian oil flows and OPEC+'s decision to increase production in July.

Oil prices rose earlier after a U.S. court ruled Wednesday that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority by imposing broad tariffs on imports from trading partners. The ruling, however, did not involve specific industry tariffs that Trump imposed on autos, steel and aluminum under a separate law.

The ruling has supported risk sentiment in global markets that have been concerned about the impact of tariffs on economic growth, but some experts say the positive effect may be temporary, as the Trump administration has said it will appeal.

Oil prices fell after Fatih Birol, Director General of the IEA, said that oil demand in China is very weak, while developments in Russia and Iran remain unknown to the oil market.

The United States and Iran are currently in an effort to curb Iran's nuclear activities, which have accelerated rapidly since President Trump withdrew the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

“The Iran situation has the market constantly worried: sometimes it seems like there is going to be a conflict, sometimes it is hoping for a peace deal. Right now, the market is moving based on both technical factors and emotions,” said Phil Flynn , senior analyst at Price Futures Group.

On the supply side, the market is also concerned about the possibility of the US imposing new sanctions on Russian oil. At the same time, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+) may agree on Saturday to accelerate the pace of oil production increase in July.

“We expect OPEC+ to agree to increase output by 411,000 barrels per day. We also expect a similar increase to last through the third quarter, as the group shifts its focus to defending market share,” ING analysts said.

Adding to the supply risks, Chevron has ended its oil exploration and other operations in Venezuela after its key licenses were revoked by the Trump administration in March. Venezuela had previously canceled some cargoes scheduled for delivery to Chevron in April, citing payment concerns under US sanctions.

Chevron used to export about 290,000 barrels of oil per day from Venezuela, equivalent to more than a third of the country's total oil production, before the shutdown.

US crude and gasoline inventories fell last week, while distillate inventories rose, according to market sources familiar with data from the American Petroleum Institute (API).

Meanwhile, a wildfire in Alberta, Canada, forced residents of a small town to evacuate and temporarily halted some oil and gas operations, which could impact supplies.
