Hanoi residents are busy preparing offerings for the Dragon Boat Festival.
From early morning, Hang Be Market (Hoan Kiem District) was bustling with customers coming to buy offerings for the Dragon Boat Festival.
During this occasion, glutinous rice wine is the most popular dish because it is indispensable on the ancestral altar. According to folk beliefs, the pungent taste of glutinous rice wine can kill insects and diseases in the human body.
Today, the price of glutinous rice wine has increased by about double or triple compared to normal days. Each kilogram costs 100,000 - 120,000 VND, while the retail price is around 20,000 - 30,000 VND per box.
Despite the soaring prices, people are still happy to buy it because the dish remains affordable. "This year, my family brewed over 200 kg of glutinous rice wine to sell, dividing it between two markets, with each person receiving 100 kg. From early morning until now, I've already sold nearly half a ton, and I think it will all be gone by noon," said one vendor.
Besides glutinous rice wine, mini offering trays containing glutinous rice wine, fruits, fresh flowers, and various cakes such as xu xue and gio cakes, priced at 400,000 VND per tray, are attracting many customers.
According to the seller, the highlight of this offering tray is that, despite its compact size, it contains many fragrant traditional flowers that are very popular with people, such as magnolia, betel nut, jasmine, peony, and lotus. In addition, it also includes glutinous rice wine, various cakes, and fruits, so consumers only need to buy once to have a complete and beautiful offering tray.
"Since yesterday, more than 20 people have ordered small offering trays from me, and since this morning I've already sold over 40 trays. By the end of the day, I'm sure I'll have at least a hundred trays; I'm just worried I won't have enough time and energy to make them," Ms. Nụ said.
The price of fresh flowers this morning increased slightly compared to normal days. Specifically, lotus flowers (like the Guanyin lotus) cost 60,000 VND/bunch, while hundred-petal lotus flowers cost 150,000 VND/bunch (an increase of 30,000 VND/bunch), and lilies cost 40,000-50,000 VND/dozen.
The price of sticky rice cakes has also increased by about 3,000 VND per piece, reaching 10,000 VND per piece.
Lychees and plums are now in season, attracting more attention from consumers than other fruits. This year, lychee prices have decreased compared to last year, due to bumper harvests in many growing regions. Currently, Thanh Ha lychees are priced from 40,000 to 60,000 VND/kg, while high-quality plums are priced from 80,000 to 100,000 VND/kg.
Thanh Ha Market (Hoan Kiem District) was also crowded with people shopping for offerings for the Dragon Boat Festival.
Every shop had customers coming in to buy things.
Everyone quickly buys fragrant flowers, sweet fruits, rice wine, and other offerings to present to their ancestors on the traditional Lunar New Year.
