By the end of 2024, the total durian growing area in Gia Lai is about 5,800 hectares and is mainly concentrated in the districts of Chu Prong, Ia Grai, Chu Puh, Duc Co, Chu Se, Dak Doa... Of which, the business area is about 3,000 hectares, with an average yield of about 30 tons/ha/year for pure durian.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Doan Ngoc Co, "Determining durian as one of the strategic fruits that can help people develop the economy , especially when the Chinese market is opening up to this fruit, the Department has promoted and guided people, cooperatives and businesses in the area to grasp production standards to develop durian gardens that meet export requirements as well as ensure the sustainable development of this product."
Talking about this, Mr. Hoang Van Tron (Ia Krieng commune, Duc Co district) shared: “My family's total durian area is 100 hectares, all of which are cultivated according to GlobalGAP standards to produce durians that meet quality standards and export requirements. “The standards for durians to meet export standards are that the fruit must be round, have enough seeds, the flesh must be delicious, and have enough sugar, at least 30% sugar content. The production process mainly uses organic fertilizers, with little chemical fertilizers. It's easy to say, but to persistently pursue this is not easy at all, you have to be really dedicated to it. But that is also the only way for the durian industry to develop sustainably.”
Similarly, to increase the value of durian trees, Mr. Le Danh Lang and members of the Ia Phin Organic Durian Cooperative (Chu Prong District) have established two growing area codes for the cooperative's 70 hectares of durian. "The cooperative has 61 members, cultivating 220 hectares of durian. For the 70 hectares that have been granted growing area codes, we always adhere to the organic production process, mainly using cow manure composted with biological products or using organic fertilizers purchased from reputable stores for fertilization, not using chemical fertilizers. Thanks to that, the durian yield has also increased, averaging more than 28 tons/ha."
It is known that Gia Lai has been granted 54 durian growing area codes with a total area of 1,281 hectares. Currently, Gia Lai durian has been exported to countries such as China, the United States, New Zealand, Australia... Gia Lai also aims to have about 6,000 hectares of durian in the whole province by 2030. And every 10 hectares will build a growing area code, and at the same time build standards such as GlobalGAP (for pure growing areas) to orient exports.
“To achieve this goal, Gia Lai has proposed many solutions, in which the agricultural sector is responsible for guiding localities to review durian acreage in the direction of forming concentrated commodity production areas with appropriate scale; strengthening guidance and support for farmers, cooperatives, cooperatives, and enterprises to build and develop codes for growing areas, preliminary processing facilities, packaging, preservation, and processing of agricultural products; at the same time, guiding localities to strengthen the inspection, management, and use of codes for growing areas and codes for agricultural product packaging facilities for export. In particular, it is necessary to organize and effectively implement the inspection and supervision of the management and use of codes for growing areas and packaging facilities that are qualified for official export to China, promptly detect and strictly handle cases of impersonation, fraud, and improper use of codes,” said Mr. Doan Ngoc Co.

The Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment added that in order to sustainably develop durian production in the province, the Provincial People's Committee has directed relevant agencies to review and provide guidance on the list of pesticides and chemicals used in durian production and post-harvest, promptly update and disseminate the list of banned active ingredients in import markets. The Department of Science and Technology has stepped up guidance and support for organizations and individuals to build and protect brands for durian products, and support the establishment of intellectual property rights for durian products.
The Department of Industry and Trade strengthens information work, guides durian production and trading enterprises, promptly grasps trade policies, technical barriers related to agricultural products and food of partner countries, supports enterprises in organizing domestic and foreign trade promotion activities; supports durian production and trading enterprises to participate in e-commerce supply chains, build brands, expand markets, promote consumption of Gia Lai durian products domestically as well as for export.
