2025 AFC U20 Championship: China narrowly beats Qatar, Australia leads the group

(NLDO) - U20 China won 2-1 over U20 Qatar but it was not enough to take the top spot when U20 Australia destroyed U20 Kyrgyzstan 5-1.

On the opening day of the 2025 AFC U20 Championship on February 12, China U20 faced Qatar U20 at home.

With the home advantage, U20 China quickly deployed an attacking style of play and had a sublime match. Kuai Jiwen opened the scoring for China in the 17th minute and just 4 minutes later, Liu Chengyu doubled the gap with an accurate finish after a delicate pass from Chen Zeshi.

Meanwhile, U20 Qatar faced many difficulties and only created one dangerous shot in the first 30 minutes of the first half.

No more goals were scored in the remainder of the first half.

In the second half, U20 Qatar played better. In the 55th minute, Mohamed Hani Faragalla reduced the score to 1-2 after a pass created by Tahsin Jamshid.

In the remaining time, U20 China could not take advantage of at least 2 more opportunities to widen the gap. The match ended with a 2-1 victory for U20 China.

However, the home team only finished second in Group A because in the early match, U20 Australia won Kyrgyzstan with a score of 5-1. Luka Jovanovic and Musa Toure each scored a double, while Daniel Benne added a goal, helping Australia to a perfect start to the tournament and temporarily hold the top spot in Group A.

In the next round of Group A, Kyrgyzstan will meet host China, Australia will face Qatar on February 15.
