Pregnant women are monitored before birth at Hung Vuong Hospital

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thi Diem Tuyet, people are increasingly understanding the mechanism of disease, not only interventions in the external environment but also changes in genetics and metabolism. The current trend in treating diseases in the world is to intervene more deeply in genetic abnormalities and metabolic abnormalities.

Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thi Diem Tuyet assessed that the prenatal screening program plays an important role in the development of obstetrics and gynecology in recent decades. If in the past, only regular pregnancy monitoring without prenatal screening was performed, many cases of full-term fetuses with malformations were born. This affected the psychology of the pregnant woman, sometimes leading to depression if the baby was born with multiple physical malformations.

With the prenatal screening program, congenital malformations can be detected early, especially multiple malformations, so that interventions can be made such as early termination of pregnancy, reducing the psychological impact on the pregnant woman, reducing the time of pregnancy and childbirth, and reducing the costs of raising a child who cannot integrate into society.

"20-30 years ago, without the prenatal screening program, each year at Hung Vuong Hospital there were 200-300 cases of full-term births with abnormalities and congenital malformations. But since the development of this program, there are now about 100 such cases each year (cases with severe malformations that have terminated pregnancy early - PV), but most of them are malformations that can be repaired because these cases were detected during prenatal screening, consultation and determined to be able to be repaired after birth," said the head of Hung Vuong Hospital.
