According to NHK, on the morning of September 3, Mr. Ryo Moriyama (46 years old), Director of a company in Hirano district, Osaka, Japan, and 5 colleagues went on a picnic on the banks of the Hidaka River, Hidakagawa town, Wakayama province.
At that time, a Vietnamese employee (23 years old) was suddenly swept away by the water. Mr. Moriyama used a surfboard to chase after the person to try to save him, but the board capsized and was submerged in water.
Mr. Moriyama and the Vietnamese employee were swept away and found downstream. According to local rescuers, the strong current carried the two about 50 meters downstream, to an area about 2.5 meters deep.
The two men were taken to hospital by helicopter, but Mr. Moriyama died. Meanwhile, the young Vietnamese man was unconscious and in critical condition. Japanese police are investigating the incident.
