Keep the profession in small village

Born and raised in the cradle of Tay culture, Ms. Nguyen Thi San, in Na Khuong village, is one of the few people in Nghia Do commune, Bao Yen district who still understands and preserves the traditional cultural identity of the nation. She has been making efforts to teach the younger generation, both to preserve traditional culture and to serve the development of community tourism.

The stilt house and the weaving loom have been the tools that have been with Mrs. San since she was a child. Taught by her grandmother and mother, at the age of 16, Mrs. San already knew how to weave and embroider brocade to make traditional costumes and utensils. Mrs. San is currently one of the few people who preserve the traditional weaving craft of the Tay Nghia Do people.

Ms. San also uses woven and brocade products to decorate her family's homestay. At her family's homestay number 5, she uses woven items to form the fence and gate, creating a natural and environmentally friendly beauty with high aesthetics. In addition, her family still maintains the lifestyle of the Tay people. Therefore, homestay number 5 is a destination chosen by many tourists.

Ms. Nguyen Thi San shared: “My family and the people of Nghia Do commune are united in preserving the identity and beauty of our people to serve the needs of sustainable tourism development, increase income, and change lives.”

Understanding and proficient in traditional crafts, in 2021, Ms. San was elected as the Chairwoman of the Cooperative for Preservation and Promotion of Traditional Crafts in Nghia Do Commune. She has mobilized members to preserve, promote and teach traditional crafts to farmer members, creating many beautiful, diverse and environmentally friendly products. Ms. Luong Thi Kiem, Na Luong village, Nghia Do commune, Bao Yen district confided: "Ms. San is enthusiastic, teaching us, and she guides us enthusiastically and thoughtfully for anything we do not understand."

In addition, she also participates in teaching traditional crafts to students in extracurricular activities of schools. Every year, Bao Yen High School No. 3 organizes the Folk Culture Festival of Ethnic Groups and invites artisans and elders with deep understanding of culture to guide students in designing unique cultural products, including Ms. Nguyen Thi San, the main instructor in weaving and brocade embroidery. Through the meticulous and easy-to-understand guidance of her and the artisans, students quickly absorb and raise their awareness of preserving culture. Teacher Bui Van Hien, Principal of Bao Yen High School No. 3, shared: "The knowledge that Ms. San and the artisans teach students is very valuable in building a model of a school that is closely linked to practice, a multicultural school".

Developing tourism associated with preserving local culture is Nghia Do's tourism development strategy. Sharing about this goal, Mr. Ly Van Noi, Chairman of Nghia Do Commune People's Committee, Bao Yen District said: "Nghia Do always creates conditions and encourages people to participate in preserving and developing traditional crafts. Ms. Nguyen Thi San and many local people have actively participated in preserving traditional costumes, weaving, and brocade weaving, contributing to the development of sustainable community tourism in Nghia Do".
