In the context of the livestock industry nationwide facing many difficulties due to high feed prices and fluctuations in the consumer market, the model of raising indigenous chickens in Lac Thuy district still maintains stability and development. The brand "Lac Thuy Chicken" not only stands firm domestically, but also expands to many potential markets thanks to its superior quality and scientific production organization.

The chicken farming model of Ms. Luu Thi Yen, Dong Noi village, Dong Tam commune (Lac Thuy) is highly economically efficient.

Resilience from natural advantages

Lac Thuy chicken or also known as purple plum chicken. This is a native chicken breed that can withstand cold climates well, grows quickly, and has delicious meat. The breed has been successfully restored and preserved by the National Institute of Animal Husbandry. Currently, the district's total chicken herd is about 1.7 million, raised in many communes such as An Binh, Phu Thanh, Dong Tam... The district has formed a chain of chicken farming links; cooperatives and farming households have boldly applied science and technology, and innovated in making cages, automatic feeders, and waterers... Thereby, reducing the number of care workers and improving economic efficiency.

To ensure the best quality chickens when they reach consumers, farmers use plant-based feed such as rice, corn, and duckweed grown or purchased locally by members. Farms are planned and built to ensure standards of scale, density, and green area. The entire farm uses a waste treatment system to avoid affecting the environment...

Mr. Vu Tien Sy, Director of Hai Dang Cooperative, An Binh Commune, said: "The Cooperative currently has 11 members and over 100 associated farming households. The Cooperative is producing and trading two products: meat chicken and fresh whole vacuum-packed chicken. To ensure that consumers are completely assured of the quality of the products, the Cooperative has implemented a closed process from breeding, preliminary processing to preservation and distribution. Thanks to not using industrial feed, no banned substances, no growth stimulants, the chicken products produced by the Cooperative always receive positive feedback. The chicken meat is firm, moderately chewy, and can be processed into many dishes; the boiled chicken has clear water, a characteristic aroma, soft and sweet meat, not mushy; the fried chicken does not release much water, the meat is not dry. Therefore, it is positively received by the market."

Brand development associated with market expansion

With its confirmed quality, the consumption of Lac Thuy chicken products is increasing. The products are not only consumed in the district and provincial markets but are also available in a number of clean food stores and supermarkets in Hanoi and the provinces of Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh. The selling price of chicken meat ranges from 70,000 - 72,000 VND/kg for hybrid chickens and 74,000 - 75,000 VND for purebred chickens. Lac Thuy chicken products have been recognized as meeting the 4-star OCOP standards at the provincial level and are aiming for higher standards to serve demanding domestic and foreign markets.

From economic efficiency, people in Lac Thuy district have expanded the scale of chicken farming towards forming a commodity area. Many households have developed a model of hill garden farms combined with safe chicken farming with thousands of chickens. Along with brand building, the district actively promotes products at fairs, festivals, agricultural events... Lac Thuy chickens are also present on online sales channels, e-commerce platforms such as Postmart.vn, Voso.vn...

It can be said that the greatest success of Lac Thuy chicken farmers is the support and trust of consumers across the country. Lac Thuy chicken has been granted a Certificate of Protection by the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Science and Technology in Decision No. 19793/QD-SHTT, dated March 19, 2019.

To preserve genetic resources and develop local chicken breeds in the direction of sustainable farming, Lac Thuy district is implementing support mechanisms, linkage models, creating favorable conditions for breeders and economic sectors; allocating district budget to build a certification brand for Lac Thuy chicken... However, with the situation of high feed prices, many households are running out of capital, making it difficult to maintain a sustainable model. Therefore, more attention is needed from all levels and sectors so that breeders can feel secure in production, improve product competitiveness, and bring Lac Thuy chicken to all parts of the country.
