In recent years, many households in Phu Cu district have boldly grafted lychee onto hybrid lychee roots. This method has contributed to expanding the area, increasing output, and initially bringing high economic efficiency to the people.
In early June, we visited the lychee garden of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Kiem's family in Ba Dong village, Phan Sao Nam commune (Phu Cu). Showing us around the garden, Mr. Kiem excitedly said: At this time, his family is focusing on harvesting lychees to supply to traders. This crop has a lot of fruit, the selling price is from 100,000 VND/kg to 120,000 VND/kg.
In addition to the first-generation lychee trees, Mr. Kiem's family also successfully grafted 7 lychee trees onto hybrid lychee roots. After 5 years of care, these grafted trees yielded an average of 40-50kg/tree, with beautiful fruit and quality comparable to the first-generation lychee, which are popular in the market.
In Pham Xa village, Tien Tien commune, Mr. Nguyen Van Kham's lychee garden is also in harvest season. Mr. Kham said: In 2021, my family boldly used grafts from the first lychee trees in Phan Sao Nam commune to graft directly onto 30 available early-ripening hybrid lychee trees. After a year of implementation, 100% of the grafted trees survived and more than 90% of the grafted trees grew healthily, and have begun to be harvested. With initial positive results, my family continued to expand the area of grafting lychee on hybrid lychee trees. To date, 60 lychee trees of the family have been harvested, with an expected yield of about 1 ton of fruit. When ripe, lychee has a beautiful bright red color, a sweet and aromatic flavor, an average of 14-15 fruits/kg, is favored by the market and has a stable selling price at a high level, bringing in an income of more than 100 million VND.
The success of households like Mr. Kiem and Mr. Kham has become the driving force for the method of grafting egg lychee onto hybrid lychee roots to be widely replicated.
Ms. Dong Thi Thu Huong, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors, Director of Minh Tien Agricultural Cooperative, Tien Tien Commune, said: Previously, the Cooperative mainly grew early-ripening hybrid lychee. However, realizing the great economic potential of the egg lychee variety and with the support and technology transfer from the Department of Science and Technology, in 2021, we boldly implemented grafting egg lychee on hybrid lychee rootstock. To date, more than 2 hectares have been harvested with an expected yield of more than 10 tons of fruit, beautiful appearance, and quality equivalent to the first-generation egg lychee, with a high selling price. In the coming time, the Cooperative strives to expand the area of grafting egg lychee on hybrid lychee rootstock to 20 hectares.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Phu Cu district, the whole district currently has 10.2 hectares of lychee grafted on hybrid lychee roots, with an expected output of 15 tons of fruit this year. With the current high selling price, this area brings stable income to many farmers, contributing to diversifying the crop structure, improving the competitiveness of Phu Cu agricultural products in the market.
Mr. Vu Xuan Thuy, Vice Chairman of Phu Cu District People's Committee, said: In order to improve productivity, output and meet the increasing demand of the market, with the support and transfer of science and technology from the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province, many households in the district have boldly applied the method of grafting egg lychee on hybrid lychee rootstock. This is an effective method to replace existing varieties with more advantageous varieties without having to completely replant, helping to save initial investment costs and harvest time for farmers, speeding up the process of converting crop structure, towards varieties of crops with higher economic value, in line with market trends. The successful application of egg lychee grafting technique on hybrid lychee rootstock in Phu Cu district not only opens up a new potential direction for the local agricultural sector but also promises to bring high economic efficiency to the people.
