Specifically, the defendants posted ads on Facebook to trick users into downloading a fake version of Bard AI that contained malware, which once it was installed on the device could allow the bad guys to gain access to the victim's account. Google said the group's targets were small businesses and Facebook advertisers.
As the artificial intelligence (AI) craze continues to spread globally, tech companies are facing new challenges and legal issues. Google general counsel Halimah DeLaine Prado said that as the public becomes more interested in AI tools, bad actors will exploit this and target the unsuspecting.
The search giant accused a group of hackers of impersonating the company and hosting malware on Google Sites and Google Drive.
Fake Google Fanpage to deceive users
Google does not currently know the identity of the hacker group behind the Facebook accounts "Google AI", "AIGoogle", "AiGoogle", "AIGoogle.Plus", "AIGoogle Bard FB" and "AIGoogleBard". The defendants' names will be added as their identities become known during the investigation.
In addition, the company is asking the court to issue a permanent injunction to prevent counterfeit versions of Bard AI from being used, and wants the scammers to pay damages. Google said that if the lawsuit is successful, it will serve to protect users from similar scams in the future.
On November 13, the company also accused another group of scammers of creating 65 Google accounts to file thousands of copyright infringement reports against more than 117,000 websites. The fake complaints led to the takedown of more than 100,000 business websites, causing millions of dollars in losses.
