On May 19, 2025, the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) officially announced the election of Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Phu , senior researcher of the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, as a new academician . This is a worthy recognition for his outstanding contributions in the fields of mathematics and computational science .

International Academic Journey
Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Phu was born in 1956 in Nghe An . He defended his doctoral thesis (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1983 and his doctorate of science (Dr. sc. nat.) in 1987 at Leipzig University, Germany. Since 1992, he has established a research collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computation of Heidelberg University. In 2008, he was invited to be Werner Romberg Guest Professor at the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical Methods and Computation for Science.
Professor Phu's main research interests include optimization, optimal control, numerical analysis, and scientific computing. He has chaired 7 international scientific conferences on high-performance computing (2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018) and 23 annual scientific conferences on optimization and scientific computing since 2003.
During his career, Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Phu has held many important positions such as: Member of the Asian Representative Council of the International Mathematical Union (2011-2014); member of the Editorial Board of 6 prestigious international journals specializing in mathematics; Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Journal of Mathematics (2011-2022) and is currently the Honorary Editor-in-Chief of this journal.
Being elected to the European Academy of Sciences is the highest recognition of Professor Phu's outstanding scientific contributions and international standing.
The highest recognition for outstanding scientific contributions
In the letter from Professor Rodrigo Martins - President of the European Academy of Sciences - to Professor Hoang Xuan Phu, it was affirmed: "The election was approved by the Academy's council after a rigorous evaluation process, demonstrating the highest recognition of the professor's outstanding scientific contributions and international status."
The European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) is an independent organisation that promotes academic excellence. It brings together leading scientists, engineers and scholars from a wide range of disciplines, representing cutting-edge science across the continent.
The core mission of EurASc is to promote excellence in science and technology; support policy-making based on sound scientific evidence; and enhance cross-border research cooperation, aiming at science for the global common good.
Not only has he just been elected to EurASc, Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Phu is also a member of four other prestigious Academies, reflecting his strong international standing:
In 2004, he became a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences (Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften), one of the oldest and most prestigious academies in Germany.
In 2010, he was elected to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften), which brings together the best scientists in the state of Bavaria.
In 2013, he was recognized as an academician of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), an international organization aimed at promoting scientific development in developing countries.
And in 2019, he continued to be honored by the German Academy of Engineering Sciences (acatech – Deutsche Akademie der Technikwissenschaften), the strategic advisory body on science and technology to the German federal government.
The election of Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Phu as a member of the European Academy of Sciences is not only a source of personal pride but also a testament to the development and international integration of Vietnamese science. This is a motivation for young scientists to continue to strive and contribute to the global scientific community.
Not only is he an outstanding researcher in the field of mathematics and scientific computing, Professor Dr. Hoang Xuan Phu is also known as an outspoken and sharp voice in academic, educational and scientific management issues in Vietnam.
He has spoken out about the shortcomings in the system of examining the titles of professor and associate professor, the criteria for evaluating scientific research, as well as the situation of “achievement disease” in academia. He emphasized the importance of scientific honesty and critical thinking in the research environment. According to him, academia can only develop substantially if it is built on a foundation of transparency, objective evaluation, and encouragement of independent thinking.
In a sharing with the press about the current status of reviewing the titles of professor and associate professor in Vietnam, Professor Hoang Xuan Phu emphasized the role of academic quality associated with social and national responsibility.
"Only scientists who demonstrate that they have reached international standards are truly worthy of taking on political missions and tasks, especially in the period of international integration. Otherwise, they will only contribute to leading the nation down the wrong path," he said.
