CNN on December 11 announced the list of the world's top 100 cities in 2023 according to the annual report of global market research company Euromonitor International. Vietnam has two representatives in the top 100: Ho Chi Minh City (85th) and the capital Hanoi (98th).

Paris is in first place for the third year in a row, while Dubai, UAE, is in second place. Tokyo, Japan, is in the top 10 for the first time and is ranked fourth after Madrid thanks to improved tourism infrastructure. The falling yen is seen as a boon for international tourists as they can travel cheaply and still receive good quality services. The remaining names in the top 10 include Amsterdam, Berlin, Rome, New York, Barcelona and London.

4. Tokyo, Japan
5. Amsterdam, Netherlands
6. Berlin, Germany
7. Rome, Italy
8. New York, USA

European cities are the most represented in the ranking with 7 cities in the top 10 and 63 cities in the top 100. Asia is considered to have "good achievements" in the top 20 with 6 representatives. In addition to Vietnam, three other Southeast Asian countries are honored in the list: Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The capital Bangkok ranked 33rd, Phuket ranked 80th and Pattaya-Chonburi ranked 84th, Johor Bahru ranked 87th, Singapore ranked 11th.

Experts around the world selected and scored 55 categories under 6 main criteria: economic efficiency, tourism efficiency, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and destination attractiveness, health and safety, and sustainability.

International tourism continues to recover strongly, according to CNN, with the number of trips expected to reach 1.3 billion by the end of 2023 and generate about $1.7 trillion in global tourism spending. Istanbul, Türkiye, is the world's most visited city in 2023, followed by Dubai and London. The two cities with the highest annual growth in the top 100 are Hong Kong (up 2,495%) and Bangkok (up 142%).

However, according to experts, tourism growth is "mixed" news because a large number of visitors means overload, bringing negative impacts to the environment and the lives of local people.
