Nearly 3,000 hectares of pilot rice production to reduce emissions
From the spring crop of 2025, the rice production model to reduce emissions using the alternating flooding and drying technology has been piloted in Nam Phuc Thang commune (formerly Cam Xuyen district, now Thien Cam commune) with a scale of more than 50 hectares. By the summer-autumn crop of 2025, the model was expanded to 250 hectares, with 750 households participating in 3 villages of Trung Dong, Hung Loc and Ha Phuc Dong of Thien Cam commune.
These are all production areas that have converted and concentrated land, creating a favorable foundation for synchronous application of emission-reducing farming processes, mechanization and more effective field management.

After initial success, from the spring crop of 2026, Ha Tinh strives to bring the area applying alternate wetting and drying (AWD) technology in rice cultivation to adapt to climate change to 2,700 hectares. Therefore, in the production project, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has requested localities to take drastic actions, focusing on implementing this content, creating a premise for the crop industry to develop in the direction of low emissions, ecology and modernity; prioritizing budget sources to invest in irrigation and traffic works in the planning area, associated with reorganizing production in the regions towards specialization and emission reduction.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang - representative of the North Central Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology in charge of the project in Ha Tinh said: "The Institute, in coordination with Green Carbon Japan Vietnam Company and the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ha Tinh, continues to deploy the alternating flood and dry irrigation models in rice production. To ensure good results in the spring crop, the Institute will organize training courses to help technical staff and farmers master the AWD process in December; at the same time, continue to support localities in evaluating the effectiveness of the model to gradually replicate, increase productivity, reduce methane emissions and move towards sustainable farming."

Along with that, the province is oriented to expand the pilot implementation of applying technical advances and applying emission-reducing crop production measures on rice with an area of more than 230 hectares in 12 communes and wards including: Ha Huy Tap, Tran Phu, Hong Loc, Tung Loc, Cam Binh, Truong Luu, Can Loc, Gia Hanh (applying tray seedling - transplanting machine, alternating flooding and drying); Ky Anh commune (applying tray seedling, transplanting machine/cluster seedling, alternating flooding and drying) and Duc Thinh, Tung Loc, Tu My communes (demonstrating varieties combined with applying the SRI process). These models are accompanied by many enterprises supplying seeds, materials and transferring techniques, notably Ha Tinh Seeds and Trading Joint Stock Company, ADI Agricultural Investment, Trade and Development Joint Stock Company, Cuong Tan Company Limited, Vietnam Seeds Group Joint Stock Company (VinaSeed), ...
Ms. Vo Thi Hong Minh - Director of Ha Tinh Seed and Trading Joint Stock Company shared: "This year, the spring crop production project has many new points, the most prominent of which is the implementation of emission-reducing rice cultivation models. This is a trend in line with the orientation of sustainable agricultural production and climate change adaptation of the province as well as the whole country. In the immediate future, the company has registered to participate in 2 models applying tray seedling - transplanter combined with alternating flooding and drying on Nep 98 rice variety with a total area of 40 hectares in Tung Loc and Cam Binh communes".

Many key task groups were identified.
Implementing the Project on emission reduction in the crop production sector for the period 2025 - 2035, with a vision to 2050, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ha Tinh has advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue an action plan to concretize the project with the goal of synchronous and unified implementation throughout the province, promoting agricultural restructuring towards green, sustainable and environmentally friendly.
In particular, Ha Tinh will apply technical packages such as: alternate wetting and drying (AWD) in rice cultivation; proper nutrient management, increased use of organic fertilizers, microorganisms, slow-release fertilizers; reduction of chemical pesticides, promotion of biological measures; conservation farming (minimum tillage, increased coverage, reasonable crop rotation); application of digital technology, smart sensors; use of by-products to produce biochar, application of carbon absorption measures; systematization of documents and technical instructions for each group of crops.

As a business that cooperates with Ha Tinh farmers to produce many organic farming and livestock models, Mr. Nguyen Tri Ha - representative of Que Lam Group Joint Stock Company said: "To improve efficiency and motivate people to participate, policies need to continue to be specified in terms of support levels, beneficiaries, implementation methods and monitoring mechanisms. When there is a suitable policy corridor, businesses are ready to expand links, provide services and promote sustainable rice production to reduce emissions."
At the same time, the province also deployed 9 key demonstration model groups to reduce emissions at regional and value chain scale, including: rice cultivation to reduce emissions; organic rice production and organic orientation; conversion of crop and livestock structure on rice land (rice - aquatic products; 2 rice crops - 1 fish crop); rotation of spring peanuts - summer-autumn rice; rotation of spring rice - autumn-winter peanuts; low-emission industrial tea production; low-emission orange production; low-emission Phuc Trach grapefruit production; low-emission pineapple production.

Mr. Tran Hung - Head of the Department of Crop Production and Livestock Husbandry of Ha Tinh said: "The project on reducing emissions in the crop production sector will strongly transform production towards adapting to climate change, modernizing technology, increasing the value of agricultural products and gradually participating in the carbon market, contributing to increasing economic efficiency for producers.
Based on reviewing the advantages of each region and locality, Ha Tinh has developed many solutions to achieve the goal of 15,000 hectares of rice area applying alternating flooding and drying by 2030, and applying mechanized cluster sowing and row sowing combined with alternating flooding and drying to reach 5,000 hectares,...
