Two major universities in Australia merge, aiming to expand relations with Vietnam

The two largest universities in South Australia, the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide, will merge and have a new name, Adelaide University.

On the evening of September 11, the announcement ceremony of the new Adelaide University was held in Ho Chi Minh City.

The University of South Australia has more than 36,000 students (2022) and the University of Adelaide has about 30,000 students (2023).

After the merger, Adelaide University became one of the largest universities in Australia with an international student network from more than 100 countries and more than 300 training programs.

The University of Adelaide's alumni community is 400,000 strong in 150 countries worldwide.

Adelaide University will also become a member of the G8 group - the group of 8 strongest research universities in Australia, along with the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney... considered prestigious universities in Australia.

Adelaide University will enroll its first cohort for the 2026 academic year and will open its doors to students from 1 January 2026.

At the launch, Ms. Rebecca Ball - Deputy Consul General of Australia in Ho Chi Minh City and Senior Trade Counselor of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission - said that education is one of the leading areas of cooperation between Australia and Vietnam.

According to her, the establishment of one of the largest universities in Australia will create more study opportunities for Vietnamese students, especially in emerging fields of study in the fields of information technology, sustainable development... in which the school has strengths.

“Adelaide University’s programs will help address the strategic priorities of Vietnam and the wider Southeast Asian region, including equipping students with skills in the digital economy and high-tech industries as well as agribusiness, health services and engineering,” said Professor Jessica Gallagher, Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of Adelaide University.

In addition, Professor Jessica Gallagher informed that Adelaide University will develop more partnerships with universities and businesses in Vietnam in the coming time for mutual development goals.
