In an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) on January 13, Zhi Jianjun said that efforts to integrate unmanned systems into military training have been carried out across the entire fleet. This is the first time China has acknowledged the role of the Type 076 warship as an unmanned aircraft carrier.
Zhi Jianjun is the commander of the PLA's most advanced destroyer, the domestically built Type 055 stealth guided missile destroyer, the Nanchang.
Emphasizing the growing role of unmanned vehicles and attack robots on the battlefield, Zhi Jianjun said: "Not only our destroyers, but also our aircraft carriers, the newly launched Type 076, the previous Type 075 (amphibious assault ship) and other ships are all participating and will participate. Unmanned operations are an undeniable trend in modern warfare."
Zhi Jianjun's comments are a sign of the PLA's commitment to upgrading its automation and unmanned technology.
He also stressed the Nanchang's ability to form independent strike groups - "airborne command aircraft, surface ships, submarines and the new Type 076 amphibious assault ship."
