According to statistics from the Customs Department, by the end of August this year, the export value of rattan, bamboo, sedge, and carpet products from Vietnam reached 574 million USD, a slight increase of 5.4% compared to the same period last year.
The main export markets remain the US, Japan, Europe, India, etc. Among them, the US is the largest customer for this group of handicraft products from Vietnam, with a turnover of 266 million USD, accounting for 46.3% of the export turnover of this industry in the past 8 months.
Japan ranked second with a turnover of 37.7 million USD. In addition, the top 5 main export markets also included the UK (28.5 million USD), Spain (27.6 million USD), and India (21.57 million USD).
Last year, exports of this group of handicraft products reached a value of $804 million.
According to the Forestry and Forest Protection Department ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), Vietnamese rattan and bamboo products are the highest-value export group among non-timber forest products. Along with China, Vietnam is one of the top five rattan and bamboo exporting countries in the world.
Wicker and bamboo products are becoming increasingly popular globally, especially in interior design and home decoration. The growing interest in green living and the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly products is attracting consumers worldwide and opening up production and business opportunities for enterprises and craft villages in Vietnam.
According to the Vietnam Handicraft Export Association, in the last five years, the number of customers from the US, Europe, Japan, and other countries visiting our production workshops has increased significantly, and orders have also grown.

This is because Vietnamese rattan, bamboo, rush, and mat products are aesthetically pleasing, of good quality, and competitively priced compared to handicrafts from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and other countries.
Notably, in Europe, consumers are increasingly prioritizing unique, environmentally friendly products that reflect cultural identity. In particular, Millennials (Gen Y), who account for 45% of the market share, and over 70% of urban consumers prefer handcrafted products.
The Vietnam Handicraft Export Association estimates that Vietnam's rattan and bamboo weaving industry has the potential to capture 10-15% of the global market share, with export turnover projected to grow at an average rate of 29.5% per year.
With the global bamboo market projected to reach nearly $83 billion by 2028, rattan and bamboo weaving could bring in billions of dollars for Vietnam.
