Witnesses said the male passenger appeared calm, telling people he opened the door to "get some fresh air."
The male passenger's actions caused chaos in the plane cabin and passengers had to wait 20 minutes to get off.
Although no one was injured, the male passenger was taken in for questioning by police for opening the plane's emergency exit.
In China, opening an airplane emergency exit can be severely punished, depending on the type of plane and the circumstances.
Earlier this year, a United Airlines flight to Shanghai, China, had to divert back to California, USA, after 3 hours of flight because the pilot forgot his passport.
Specifically, United Airlines Flight 198 departed Los Angeles International Airport at 1:44 p.m. local time and was scheduled to land at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. However, the pilot discovered that he had forgotten his passport and was forced to return to California, landing in San Francisco at around 5 p.m., according to the flight log tracked on Flight Aware.
The final flight landed at its destination six hours later than scheduled, affecting the plans of some passengers.
