Daniel Radcliffe recently spoke out about his professional relationship with JK Rowling - the author of the 7 Harry Potter books. This comes after the female writer's statement when she criticized stars like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson for opposing her views.
Actor Daniel Radcliffe
"What happened makes me sad when I think about the person I met, the times we had, the books she wrote, the world she created... It's all part of who I am," Radcliffe said in an interview with The Atlantic . He also confirmed that he has not had direct contact with Rowling since her tweet in June 2020.
At the time, he also asserted that Rowling's transphobic comments did not reflect the socio -political views of the Harry Potter actors.
He also added that his career would not have been as successful without Rowling, saying: "I would probably have a very different life without her". However, that does not mean "I am in debt to the point of having to say anything other than what I truly believe in my whole life".
"I have worked with many LGBTQ+ non-profits for the past 12 years, and it would seem cowardly not to speak out about the recent controversy. I always hope to help those who have been negatively affected by these comments. And it is fair to say that these are Rowling's views, not those of all the people who have worked on Harry Potter [...] I will continue to support the equal rights of all LGBTQ+ people," he added.
In 2022, Radcliffe also told IndieWire that the Harry Potter series resonated with “a lot of kids and queer and trans youth.” He felt a responsibility to support his fans.
"I've met a lot of gay kids and trans kids and young people who are deeply affected by Harry Potter," the actor shared. "And so when I saw them hurt that day by the comments, I always wanted them to know that not everyone in the series felt that way. And that's really important. I don't think it's possible to look at yourself in the mirror and not say anything."
Author JK Rowling
Although Radcliffe has severed ties with Rowling, Warner Bros. Discovery will continue to work with the controversial author. It is understood that a television adaptation of all seven books is still in the works, and Rowling will act as a producer, ensuring that parts of her books are adapted correctly and completely.
Casey Bloys, Head of Content at Max and HBO, said Rowling's controversial public views on transgender people were "nuanced and complex online commentary" and "unrelated to the adaptation of these novels".
"Our priority is what happens on screen. And obviously the Harry Potter story is a positive affirmation of love and self-acceptance. That's our top priority," he added.
