Recently, the MV Bắc Bling ( Bắc Ninh ) by Hòa Minzy created a fever, receiving the attention of many audiences. As of March 5, after more than 3 days of release, the MV has received 12 million views, maintaining the leading position on the YouTube Vietnam trending chart.
Besides the musical element, the MV also attracted the attention of the audience thanks to the visual part that delicately blends traditional and modern elements. Stylist Khuc Manh Quan - the person behind the process of building the style and creating costumes for the actors participating in the MV - said that this is the proud achievement of the whole crew.
During the process of preparing costumes for the MV Bac Bling , the stylist and his colleagues had many memorable memories. The video involved nearly 300 people in Lac Xa, Que Tan, Que Vo (Bac Ninh), from nearly 90-year-old elders to elementary school children. This meant that the stylist had to prepare more than 300 costumes.
Regarding Hoa Minzy’s costumes, the stylist said that the female singer’s clothing in the MV was all made by designer Cao Minh Tien. For the costumes of the extras, Khuc Manh Quan had to balance quality, quantity and cost. The stylist bought them from Vietnamese brands or rented them from performance costume stores. For the velvet scarves and turbans of the elderly, he went to craft villages in Ha Dong.
"If we count the costumes for Hoa Minzy's press conference, the total number of clothes I had to prepare was more than 500 sets. With such a large number, my group of 6 people had to spend more than a week searching and collecting items. After that, the costumes were packed in 3-4 large sacks. We hired a private car to transport the costumes to Bac Ninh, gathering them at each filming location," Khuc Manh Quan said.
To help singer Hoa Minzy save as much money as possible, the stylist and crew transported some of the clothes to Bac Ninh in advance. The costumes for the last day of filming - mainly quilted jackets by designer Quyen Nguyen - were transported later.
"I have to update every minute to ensure each box of items arrives safely. During filming, these boxes are also carefully preserved. Only 15 minutes before filming begins do the elderly start changing into their quilted clothes," the stylist shared.
Previously, Khuc Manh Quan accompanied Hoa Minzy in the MV Thi Mau . When preparing costumes for the extras, who were women and the elderly, he faced a lot of pressure. Each elderly person has a different body shape, so the crew had to find outfits that fit each person. Accessories such as scarves, earrings, necklaces... also had to be carefully selected.
"Old people are also very meticulous, the younger generation like us must be very careful, especially with costumes that carry traditional cultural elements like the Ao Tu Than, we must seriously research and choose carefully," said the stylist.
Before each scene, the costume team spends hours arranging the costumes. For big scenes like filming in the communal house yard, the crew has to iron the costumes from morning to afternoon to complete the preparation.
After working with Hoa Minzy many times, the Hanoi-born stylist said he was impressed with the professionalism and meticulousness of the female singer. The MV was filmed continuously for 3 days, sometimes until 5am, but the female singer did not show any signs of fatigue.
In terms of costumes, the singer and the stylist team discussed carefully and prepared many options so that in case of filming, if they feel it is not suitable, the whole team will have alternative costumes.
