Danger from modified electric vehicles

Currently, the market for electric bicycles and electric motorbikes is very diverse in terms of types and prices. For work convenience, many families have equipped this type of vehicle so that their children can go to school by themselves without having to spend time picking them up or using service vehicles.

However, at the age of adolescence, they often have a mentality of exploring and showing off, along with the ease of finding and buying parts to modify their vehicles, so many students buy them themselves or ask mechanics to change the structure of their vehicles.

Dozens of modified electric vehicles were recently discovered by traffic police while gathering at 10/3 Square in Buon Ma Thuot City.

With just one click of searching on social networking sites, there are dozens, hundreds of groups related to electric vehicle modification activities such as " Dak Lak 47 Electric Vehicle", "Buon Ma Thuot Electric Vehicle", "Do Electric Vehicle"... These groups attract a lot of participants, the smallest group has 4,000 - 5,000 members, some groups have more than 100,000 members. The content posted in the groups often revolves around buying, selling, and exchanging components and accessories of modified electric vehicles.

Recently, on a social networking site, a clip “review of modified electric vehicles for students in Buon Ma Thuot City” was posted by an individual, attracting a lot of attention, many of whom were very upset and worried about those who use these vehicles. To attract attention, the vehicle modification community filmed the vehicles from many different angles, at well-known locations such as Phan Dinh Giot Street, 10/3 Square. According to the introduction of a case in the vehicle modification community, these are “multi-purpose monsters, not only for going out, going to school but also carrying a career on the saddle…”. Even, to emphasize the speed of the vehicle, a young person even advertised that the modified vehicle could “climb the Central Highlands slopes like running on clouds…”.

Normally, electric bicycles have a maximum speed of no more than 25 km/h, electric motorbikes no more than 50 km/h; after modification, the speed can reach 50 - 70 km/h, even more than 100 km/h. The cost to modify a vehicle ranges from millions to tens of millions, even hundreds of millions of VND/vehicle, much higher than the cost of the original vehicle. For example, a 10th grade student at a high school in Buon Ma Thuot City bought an old electric bicycle for 5 million VND, then had it modified for about 25 million VND. This student is also a member of the group "Electric Vehicle Modified 47 Dak Lak".

Recently, in just one hour of checking in front of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Secondary School (Buon Ma Thuot City), the traffic police force discovered 6 students using electric bicycles with signs of modification and structural changes.

At the end of April, the Traffic Police Department (Provincial Police) promptly stopped and handled a group of nearly 70 teenagers and students using modified electric vehicles, gathering at 10/3 Square in Buon Ma Thuot City to perform, record videos to attract likes, causing disorder.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Huy Thanh, Head of the Traffic Police Department, said that currently, the Traffic Police force is resolutely handling the situation of students using modified electric vehicles, and continues to monitor on Facebook and Zalo pages to prevent teenagers from gathering to modify vehicles, causing disorder and traffic safety. At the same time, coordinate with other functional forces to thoroughly handle establishments that modify vehicles for students. In addition to the participation of functional agencies, the Traffic Police Department also hopes that schools and parents will regularly check and remind students and their children not to use modified electric vehicles to ensure safety when participating in traffic.
