THERE IS NO TRUE THEMATIC EXHIBITION

Sharing at the seminar "Innovation and improvement of the quality of thematic exhibitions at art museums in Vietnam" organized by the Da Nang Fine Arts Museum yesterday, August 7, Dr. Nguyen Anh Minh, Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, acknowledged: The ways of organizing thematic exhibitions at Vietnamese art museums have a clear gap compared to international ones. From the reality of visiting many museums around the world , Mr. Minh said that in developed countries, thematic exhibitions are not only invested in elaborately but also charge very high fees, even 3-4 times higher than the normal ticket price. On the contrary, in Vietnam, most thematic exhibitions are still... free. This reflects the lack of resources, from organization costs to support policies.

"Thematic exhibitions in Vietnam today are still very different from international ones, mainly taking place in a short period of time and often serving political tasks. Meanwhile, in developed countries, thematic exhibitions are carefully prepared, thoroughly researched for many years by professional curators, held for several months and accompanied by products serving the public. The investment level for these exhibitions abroad is also very large. In Vietnam, art museums are showing signs of improvement, but organizing a true thematic exhibition is still a big challenge," said Dr. Nguyen Anh Minh.

Citing evidence from his unit, Mr. Minh said that the museum had assigned the task of researching a thematic exhibition to the Collection Research Department for 2 years, but the plan was unsuccessful and had to be transferred back to the Exhibition - Education Department to implement the exhibition in a rotating, short-term form.

According to Mr. Minh, there are three major challenges for thematic exhibitions, including: source of artifacts, human resources and finance. With more than 20,000 artifacts in storage, the museum still has to rotate displays due to the lack of new artifacts, while connections with private collectors and local museums are limited. Professional curators are almost non-existent, although the museum has tried for many years to build this position properly but has not succeeded. Finances for each exhibition are very limited, usually under 100 million VND, not enough to organize attractive exhibitions.

TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION IS NECESSARY

From the unprecedented attraction of visitors after 3 months of operation at the new facility, Deputy Director of Da Nang Museum Ngo Thi Bich Van said that since April 1, the museum has welcomed nearly 160,000 visitors, of which the number of international visitors has tended to increase. The key factor that helps the museum increase its attraction, according to Ms. Van, is the innovative display method, the application of modern technology, while still respecting the architectural structure of the relic building over 130 years old (formerly the Governor's Palace).

"Technology is used as a means to support interpretation, not to replace humans but to contribute to improving the effectiveness of exhibitions in limited spaces," said Ms. Van, adding that thematic exhibitions need to choose themes close to public tastes, survey needs after each program and enhance accompanying experiential activities to keep visitors coming back.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, Hue Museum of Fine Arts, also believes that thematic exhibitions need to apply modern technology to create an interactive environment for visitors to easily explore exhibition content in a more vivid way, such as: scanning QR codes on artifacts, creating interactive games, providing personalized experiences... Along with that, museums need to diversify experiential activities so that visitors not only enjoy the exhibition but also become members of the exhibition, focusing on visitors, grasping the needs of many different audiences, to gain experience for future exhibitions.

According to MSc. Do Phuc Thai Nguyen, Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, in the context of a strong social shift towards emphasizing experience, personalization and digital transformation, the linear exhibition model, which tends towards passive reception, is gradually becoming less attractive. MSc. Nguyen believes that museums need to innovate their exhibition methods towards focusing on the public, promoting interaction and multi-sensory experiences. Integrating technology (VR, AR, directional audio, touch screens, etc.) will expand the range of art perception, enhancing the connection between the public and the works. The exhibition space needs to be designed to be open, flexible, and easy to restructure for each topic. The lighting system, materials, visuals and movement flow should be arranged as a whole to create a coherent and attractive experience...

Sharing the same view, Dr. Nguyen Anh Minh emphasized that technology is not the only solution, but is an important tool to enhance the experience, interaction and attract the public, especially the young. However, many museums currently do not have enough capacity to invest in lighting systems, projection equipment, interactive spaces or modern technological solutions, such as 3D mapping, AI applications, etc. According to Dr. Minh, if there is a lack of technology, even if the museum owns valuable artifacts or has quality content, it will be difficult to attract young audiences who are used to high-tech experiences in their daily lives.

"The young generation is closely connected to technology, and this is an important factor in building public awareness for museums. Without technology, museums will find it difficult to attract young people," said Dr. Minh.

Exhibition of 150 sketches about Hue heritage

Within the framework of the discussion program, on the afternoon of August 7, the Hue Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the Da Nang Museum of Fine Arts opened a thematic exhibition entitled “The Beauty of Hue Cultural Heritage through Sketching Art”. The exhibition introduces 150 sketches selected from the collection of nearly 1,500 sketches about Hue by the Hue Museum of Fine Arts. This is the result of the creative journey of many architects and artists who have directly sketched at architectural works, famous landscapes, and people of Hue from 2020 to present. The opening of the exhibition is combined with the exhibition and performance of Hue traditional Ao Dai with the theme of Ao Dai and Heritage, and the experience of woodblock printing of embossed patterns on nine urns and Sinh Hue village paintings.
