Forming a synchronous and advanced stroke treatment network

Recently, the World Stroke Organization (WSO) chose Hanoi for the first time to host the Global Stroke Alliance Conference. The conference is a scientific forum that contributes to promoting new initiatives, effective treatment models, and especially strengthening connections between policy makers, experts and the global medical community.

Hundreds of industry experts share experiences and update in-depth knowledge.

In addition to national roundtable discussions on the burden, risk factors, current status of acute stroke care and treatment, need for support from the World Health Organization, etc., the conference included three thematic workshops on acute treatment, preventive treatment and rehabilitation treatment.

Stroke is now the second leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in adults worldwide .

According to statistics, each year there are about 12.2 million new stroke cases worldwide, with a stroke occurring every 3 seconds. In Vietnam, according to the Global Burden of Disease Report, each year there are up to 135,999 deaths due to stroke, ranking number one among cardiovascular diseases.

In order to provide timely emergency and treatment to patients, the stroke specialty has made strong progress, from building a stroke treatment network to applying advanced treatment methods. The number of stroke units has increased from 12 (in 2016) to more than 150 (in 2025)…

Bach Mai Hospital's Stroke Center is among the Top 4 stroke centers with the highest number of Diamond certifications in the world. This model has been spread and replicated to many localities in the country through: Building and upgrading stroke units/departments/centers at local hospitals; supporting the routine implementation of modern techniques such as thrombolysis, thrombectomy with mechanical instruments; organizing training courses, updating specialized knowledge to improve the quality of stroke treatment nationwide...

In Vietnam, according to the Global Burden of Disease Report, each year there are up to 135,999 deaths due to stroke, ranking number one among cardiovascular diseases.

However, stroke prevention faces many challenges, most notably the rate of patients arriving late to the hospital, exceeding the "golden time" for effective intervention; the pre-hospital emergency system has not developed synchronously, and there is a lack of specialized rapid response units for stroke.

On the other hand, there is a difference in treatment capacity between regions, along with uneven traffic infrastructure and population distribution, which is a major barrier in ensuring fair and timely treatment opportunities for all people...

Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that to effectively respond to stroke requires a strategic vision, a solid professional foundation and, above all, a spirit of deep international cooperation. Solidarity - responsibility - and an open spirit will be a strong catalyst for positive and sustainable changes in stroke prevention and treatment.

Tertiary hospitals are the core of the stroke prevention network and need to continue to make efforts in implementing and standardizing advanced stroke care models; at the same time, be more active in supporting lower-level units to update knowledge and modern techniques.

The Ministry of Health is actively deploying artificial intelligence application platforms to support image diagnosis, building a stroke risk prediction system based on big data, developing a remote emergency intervention network to shorten treatment time and personalize treatment. Units are also actively expanding cooperation with international professional organizations, participating in global initiatives...

According to Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan, in addition to promoting digital transformation and international cooperation, in the coming time, the health sector will synchronously deploy strategies to improve the effectiveness of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for stroke patients; develop and promulgate a set of criteria for evaluating stroke centers to be applied uniformly nationwide, as a basis for assessing the quality of operations according to regional and international standards.

This will be an important tool to standardize treatment capacity, ensure transparency and create motivation to improve professional quality among facilities. On the other hand, the health sector will promote specialized training on stroke, focusing on areas such as pre-hospital emergency care, cerebrovascular intervention and early rehabilitation after stroke. The capacity of the grassroots medical team also needs to be improved to shorten response time, optimize the "golden time" in treatment...
