On May 9, after Mr. Tuan expressed his wish to stop coaching the national youth teams, VFF agreed even though the contract was still valid until December 2025.
This is a surprising decision because previously, from December 2022, the 56-year-old coach from Khanh Hoa signed a 3-year contract with VFF, coaching national teams from U18 to U20. After VFF parted ways with Mr. P. Troussier, coach Hoang Anh Tuan took over as interim coach to replace the French strategist, leading the Vietnam U23 team to participate in the final round of the 2024 AFC U23 Championship in Qatar. Although they could not advance far into the tournament, coach Hoang Anh Tuan and his students completed the task of reaching the quarter-finals.

Regarding the reason for terminating the contract with VFF, Mr. Tuan said he wanted to spend more time with his family but his future is still tied to football.
However, in my opinion, Mr. Tuan is a capable coach with a desire to contribute but is being used as a "substitute" instead of being chosen to lead the national U23 team for a long time... That could be one of the reasons why Mr. Tuan decided to leave VFF.
However, when asked to make any suggestions or comments to the VFF after a period of working with the youth teams, the coach from Khanh Hoa still frankly said: "U23 Vietnam is a core group of players who will inherit the national team, so they need to regularly practice, hone their skills, and increase their experience and international competition skills. Having worked with players for a long time, from the U19 and U20 levels, my assistant team and I somewhat know how to exploit the strengths and limit the weaknesses of each player."
