Coach Velizar Popov has repeatedly made shocking statements about V.League. |
"The only thing I can say is to congratulate Hoang Anh Gia Lai on getting 3 points," coach Velizar Popov opened the post-match press conference.
"I don't want to talk too much about Vietnamese football anymore, I just came here out of respect for the press. This is just a match, very simply we will fix our mistakes and move forward," the Bulgarian coach added before ending the press conference early.
As for coach Popov personally, he has never won against Hoang Anh Gia Lai in 6 confrontations as head coach of Thanh Hoa Club (3 draws, 1 loss) and The Cong Viettel (2 losses).
In the previous round, after The Cong Viettel won 2-1 against Da Nang , coach Velizar Popov made many shocking statements about the habit of wasting time and the unfair playing style of V.League teams.
"If things remain the same in the next 2-3 years, Vietnamese football will lose to Nepal, Cambodia or Bangladesh," he commented.
"To become a champion, you need other factors off the field and I think you understand what I'm talking about. We don't belong to any system. It's very difficult to go alone against 13 other teams," Mr. Popov hinted about transparency in V.League.
On Hoang Anh Gia Lai's side, after the first victory in V.League 2025/26, coach Le Quang Trai said the result helped the whole team gain confidence to further improve for the thorny road ahead.
The victory helped Hoang Anh Gia Lai temporarily escape the bottom position with exactly 1 point more than Da Nang, while The Cong Viettel (played all 8 matches) is at risk of losing second place when the 3rd ranked team Cong An Ha Noi has only played 6 matches, only 1 point less.
