1.7 million cubic meter lake at risk of dam burst, urgent evacuation of people at night

Currently, the authorities have evacuated 60 out of nearly 100 households downstream of Cay An Lake, in Chan Rang Hao and Tou Neh villages, Ta Nang commune, to a safe place. The remaining households are being urgently evacuated, the work must be completed as soon as possible.

Due to the impact of storm No. 13, Lam Dong province has been experiencing prolonged heavy rains in recent days. Water from upstream rivers and streams has poured into lakes, reaching a high level, forcing irrigation and hydroelectric reservoirs to release water for regulation.

Cay An Lake was put into use in 2007, with a capacity of about 1.7 million cubic meters of water. After storm No. 11, the left shoulder of the main dam of this lake appeared to have localized landslides with an area of ​​60 square meters. This location formed a crack 8 meters long, more than 1 meter deep, more than 20 centimeters wide, with groundwater seeping through the foot of the dam. In addition, two other locations of the main dam also appeared to have water seepage and water leakage.

Authorities used tarpaulins to cover the area where the incident occurred to prevent rainwater from flowing in.

This situation is getting worse, especially when recently, Lam Dong province has been experiencing heavy and prolonged rains, causing rainwater to flow into the cracks. The amount of water flowing into the lake has increased, putting more pressure on the area where the incident occurred.

To respond to the main dam of Cay An Lake's cracks, the People's Committee of Ta Nang Commune has implemented a number of measures to reinforce the cracks and landslides; using tarpaulins to cover the entire affected area to prevent rainwater from flowing down and aggravating the cracks.

In recent days, local authorities have been on duty to monitor the danger level of the incident in order to proactively respond.

However, due to the complicated developments of the flood, the location of the incident is rapidly deteriorating, the risk of the Cay An lake dam breaking is very high.
