iPhone 18 Pro will have a series of 'first-time' upgrades

The iPhone 18 Pro could be the most anticipated flagship of 2026 and a competitor that every smartphone company must be wary of.

The latest information from the famous source Digital Chat Station shows that Apple will make a series of major upgrades to the screen, camera, back design and even the battery.

If these leaks turn out to be true, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be iPhone models that contain many “first-of-its-kind” technologies.

Display: Micro-punch hole and Face ID system disappears

According to Digital Chat Station, Apple will use HIAA (hole-in-active-area) technology to create a tiny hole in the screen for the selfie camera. This is completely different from the current Dynamic Island design.

Several reputable sources – including Ross Young and The Information – previously also confirmed that the iPhone 18 Pro will remove the “pill”-shaped module on the screen.

The front camera will be located in a tiny hole in the upper left corner, while the entire Face ID system will be completely hidden under the screen layer.

The question is: Will Dynamic Island disappear? No one is sure yet. It may appear when needed, even though the facial recognition hardware is completely hidden.

Another leak says the screen sizes will remain the same: 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max.

But Digital Chat Station added that “the screen shape will change,” though it’s unclear which direction Apple will customize it.

Camera with variable aperture like professional camera

If current flagships mostly use fixed apertures, the iPhone 18 Pro could be the first iPhone to allow changing camera apertures like DSLR cameras.

This information is consistent with the prediction from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in 2024. Accordingly, the 48MP main camera will use aperture blades to help users adjust the amount of light entering the sensor.

This is a huge step forward in the ability to control depth of field, brightness and night shooting quality.

Apple isn’t just focusing on lens quality. The horizontal camera cluster – a controversial design from 2025 – will continue to appear. However, the back will change significantly.

Transparent back: Apple is bolder in design language

Digital Chat Station has suggested that Apple is testing a “semi-transparent” back cover, which could allow some of the internal hardware to be seen, such as the MagSafe magnetic ring.

This design is reminiscent of the smartphone brand Nothing – the company that started the trend of phones with exposed interiors. If Apple really applies this, this will be a bold change in terms of aesthetics and product identity.

For years, Apple has maintained a philosophy of "minimalism on the outside, perfection on the inside." A semi-transparent back could mark a shift in iPhone design from subtle to expressive.

Battery: The first battery to be armored

Another breakthrough: The iPhone 18 Pro Max is said to be the first iPhone model to use a steel-cased battery.

This structure not only increases durability and heat management, but also helps to disperse heat better when the processor and modem operate at high intensity.

The combination of a glass back and an armored battery shows that Apple is aiming for a design that optimizes performance and stability during long-term use.

Configuration: 2nm chip and 12GB RAM

All iPhone 18 models are expected to feature 2nm chips – a major leap forward in the semiconductor industry, helping to increase performance and reduce power consumption. RAM is also upgraded to 12GB, bringing the iPhone on par with high-end Android flagships in multitasking.

However, the launch roadmap will change: Only the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max , and the first foldable iPhone will be introduced in 2026. The remaining versions will appear in the spring of 2027.

That means Apple is pursuing a strategy of expanding its Pro product portfolio – similar to what it did with the iPad.

If these leaks are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro isn't just an upgrade – it's a change that reshapes the future of Apple's smartphones.

In 2024–2025, Apple was criticized for not making big strides in AI, as Siri still fell short of expectations. The iPhone 16 focuses on AI, but does not deliver very convincing experiences.

With the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple shifted to hardware and that helped the device reap success.

With the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple seems to be continuing that philosophy: Removing the screen cutout to optimize the display; Allowing users to control the aperture like a professional camera; Adding a transparent back cover, creating a design mark; Upgrading the battery to ensure maximum performance.

iPhone 18 Pro will remove the screen cutout to optimize display.

There are rumors that Apple will use Google Gemini to improve Siri, but this is unlikely to create a competitive advantage because the AI is not "a product created by Apple itself".

Instead, Apple chose a path few competitors can compete with: investing in hardware and real-world experiences.

Apple is returning to its core strengths: hardware and user experience. The iPhone 18 Pro – with a series of first-of-its-kind technologies – could be the iPhone that helps Apple regain its absolute leadership in the smartphone industry.
