Support farmer-owned cooperatives to operate effectively

The province has 445 cooperatives owned by farmers, operating in the fields of cultivation, animal husbandry, aquaculture, agricultural services, handicrafts, tourism and general services. The Provincial Farmers' Affairs Committee (Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee) has focused on implementing support policies, creating conditions for cooperatives to operate effectively, creating jobs and stable income for many workers, helping farmers to become rich.

Mr. Bac Cam Khuyen, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association, Head of the Provincial Farmers' Affairs Committee, said: Every year, the Committee coordinates with relevant agencies to promote and mobilize members to establish cooperatives, attracting farmers to participate. At the same time, it guides cooperatives to develop along the value chain, apply high technology, produce clean and organic products, improve competitiveness, create jobs and stable income for members and local farmers.

In addition, the Provincial Farmers' Working Committee also coordinates with specialized departments to organize training for key officials of farmer-owned cooperatives on organization and operation methods; provide guidance on brand building, crop care processes, preservation, packaging, and product transportation. At the same time, promote trade promotion, expand consumption markets; launch the emulation movement "Good production and business", replicate typical examples of "Excellent Vietnamese Farmers", "Scientists of farmers", encourage members to start businesses, innovate, and develop the economy .

During their operation, farmer-owned cooperatives have contributed to the development of household economy, supported local authorities in guiding farmers in applying science and technology, expanding industries, and strengthening production and business linkages. Many cooperatives invest in regional linkages, value chain production, applying VietGAP, GlobalGAP processes, clean and organic production. Products have clear labels, packaging, traceability, and geographical indications; many products meet OCOP standards of 3 stars or more. Average profit is from 150-200 million VND/cooperative/year; member income is from 4-4.5 million VND/person/month.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Director of Tien Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative, Chieng Son Commune, shared: The Cooperative grows over 60 hectares of oranges, grapefruits, tangerines and longans, with an annual output of 800 tons or more. The Cooperative has received support from farmers' associations at all levels in combining fruit tree production with forest economy to maximize benefits and income for members.

At the Binh Thuan General Production, Business and Service Cooperative in Binh Thuan Commune, the Farmers' Association at all levels has created conditions for the cooperative to learn from the experiences of a number of effective cooperatives in the province. The cooperative has focused on improving production and business efficiency according to local conditions. Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, Deputy Director of the Cooperative, said: The cooperative has linked to purchase fresh tea buds for about 400 households, processed 400-500 tons of finished tea/year, and exported to the Taiwanese market through companies in Hanoi. Trong Nguyen tea products of the cooperative have been recognized as 4-star OCOP since 2019, and will be re-evaluated in 2023, contributing to increasing income and sustainably reducing poverty for the people.

To promote support for cooperatives owned by farmers, the Provincial Farmers' Affairs Committee continues to coordinate with specialized sectors to organize training and human resource development for cooperatives, combining study tours inside and outside the province. Organize policy dialogue forums to grasp needs, remove difficulties and promote effective operations of cooperatives. Promote advertising and trade promotion to expand product consumption markets. Closely follow the grassroots, coordinate propaganda and mobilize farmers to join cooperatives, exploit local potential to develop production, create jobs, and contribute to promoting local socio-economic development.
