Supporting students' academic development.

Initiated in 2017, the Civil Engineering Research and Training (CERT) model, implemented by a group of four lecturers from the University of Technology (Da Nang University), has supported many students in developing foreign language skills and scientific research capabilities.

Many valuable scholarships

As one of the first participants in CERT, Nguyen Van Tien, a former student of class 14X3, Civil Engineering major, University of Technology, received a full scholarship for a master's program in South Korea.

While studying in South Korea, Tien published 8 ISI articles. After working for a foreign structural engineering company, Tien returned to Da Nang to run the construction company he co-founded.

Similarly, nearly a year ago, Le Minh Truyen, a former student of class 19X3CLC, majoring in Civil Engineering for Transportation Infrastructure (Faculty of Bridge and Road Construction), began his academic and research journey with a scholarship from the Korean Government .

Truyen shared that the most difficult part of preparing a scholarship application is writing the personal essay and creating a study plan.

During the three months of preparation, writing, editing, and improving the quality of the essay took a lot of time. But with the support of Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Quy Duy and Vo Dinh Quang Nhat (fellow students from the same university, who had previously received scholarships in South Korea), Truyen successfully completed the essay and gained valuable experience for the interview.

It is known that, since the end of 2017, while studying and researching in the US and Australia, Dr. Do Viet Hai, along with Dr. Do Quang Trung, Dr. Hoang Phuong Tung, and Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Quy Duy (all former students of the Polytechnic University), discussed and pondered how to help students in their homeland have more opportunities to reach out to the world .

Dr. Do Viet Hai, Head of the Bridge and Underground Structures Department, Faculty of Civil Engineering, and Director of the Center for Student Support and Business Relations, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, shared: “We believe that education is the best way to change individual destinies and contribute to changing the future of the country. With that belief, we gradually developed activities to support students in developing foreign languages, research skills, finding scholarships for studying abroad… and the CERT model was born.”

After 7 years of implementation, the CERT model has achieved many impressive results. In addition to student research published while still studying at the University of Technology, through CERT's connections, many students have received full scholarships, including: 2 doctoral scholarships from Australian and American professors; 2 master's scholarships from the Japanese government; 2 master's scholarships from the Korean government; 1 master's scholarship from a Korean professor; and 15 undergraduate students receiving scholarships to participate in short-term exchange programs (1-4 weeks) in Japan and Korea.

Expand the academic advisory group.

With this model, faculty members implement an academic development ecosystem for students from their first year to graduation, including: English language scholarships, guidance on a systematic and professional English learning path; organizing scientific research groups, expanding access opportunities for students by inviting faculty and experts to organize small classes on university study methods, research skills, scientific report writing, international publication, specialized English, etc.

Faculty members support students' personal development, from skills to long-term goals, equipping them with self-understanding skills, study planning, teamwork, communication, and presentation skills; and building an academic community that connects generations…

According to Dr. Do Viet Hai, today's students are very dynamic, perceptive, and know how to utilize technology for learning and finding opportunities. They are also open-minded and willing to change to adapt.

However, the biggest weakness is a lack of perseverance and depth, especially in things that require long-term investment such as research, building foundational skills, or preparing a thorough scholarship application.

Start early, work hard, learn diligently with a proactive, kind, and persistent spirit. Only genuine competence and irreplaceable thinking are the most solid foundations for development.

In addition, Dr. Do Viet Hai also identified CERT as a long-term direction of the Center for Student Support and Business Relations in accompanying and supporting students.

In the future, the center will expand the "academic advisory group" model, linked to research groups and specialized groups, directly led by faculty members. Simultaneously, it will develop a community system for students across all courses, build open learning resources, and connect online, without limitations of time or space.

The center will strengthen its connections with alumni who have studied abroad or are working to share, inspire, and guide the next generation.

The goal is to create a seamless academic and professional ecosystem that supports students from their first year through graduation and even after they have graduated.
