The results of the 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City are expected to be released on June 20, and the 10th grade benchmark scores of high schools are usually announced on July 10. Not wanting to wait passively for the 10th grade exam results, many students have made study plans to best prepare for the new learning environment in high school.
Prepare for university entrance exam
Placing her first choice on Thu Duc High School, Truong Ngoc Anh Minh (former student of Linh Dong Secondary School, Thu Duc City) shared: "The 10th grade exam this year is relatively easy, so I predict that the benchmark score will be higher than last year. While waiting for the benchmark score, I went online to look up the new 10th grade program and find a place to study more. I am currently studying IELTS at an English center and will focus on math, physics, and chemistry to prepare for university admission in the future."
Similarly, Bao Ngoc (former student of Khanh Binh Secondary School, Ho Chi Minh City) said: "While waiting for the benchmark scores, I consulted with teachers as well as learned about where to buy and the content of 10th grade textbooks. I think this preparation is necessary to avoid confusion when entering high school."
Nguyen Bui Hoang Yen (former student of Phuoc Binh Secondary School, Thu Duc City) also predicted that the benchmark score would increase compared to previous years, but was still confident when placing her specialization wish at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted and her first choice at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School.
Right after the 10th grade entrance exam, the female student oriented herself towards her university path. "I have been preparing since the beginning of 9th grade with the intention of choosing the social sciences, specifically the D00 block. Because I haven't had many opportunities to interact with them, I am a bit hesitant between international relations and diplomacy ," Yen shared.
Hoang Yen said she will focus on 3 university entrance exam subjects from grade 10. "In addition to English, I am learning French, and I will start Russian in grade 11. I also study history and participate in extracurricular activities while waiting for my scores," the female student said.
Some students have plans for the high school graduation exam for university admission while waiting for the 10th grade benchmark scores in Ho Chi Minh City.
Meanwhile, some students take advantage of the time waiting for their 10th grade scores to improve their knowledge or do things they love. For example, Pham Duc Dai (former student of Ly Chinh Thang 1 Secondary School, Hoc Mon District) participates in social activities. “I just registered to participate in a summer camp organized by the Tan Thoi Nhi Commune Youth Union. The camp is held for 2 days and 1 night with many activities such as fashion shows, art performances, group games, etc. I think participating in these activities will help me improve my independence and relax after stressful exam days,” Dai said.
Must give up the idea of memorization and cramming
Teachers find that having students review the 10th grade curriculum and textbooks in advance will help them get used to the high school environment.
According to Mr. Trinh Van Khoat (literature teacher, Vo Van Kiet High School, District 8, Ho Chi Minh City), the key points of innovation in the 2018 General Education program are specifically shown in textbooks such as: the beginning of each lesson states specific objectives regarding qualities, abilities and skills. Knowledge objectives are not the main objectives and therefore no longer cover teaching and learning activities.
"The structure of each lesson is designed according to topics so that teachers can guide students to approach, explore and grasp the steps, operations and characteristics of that type of lesson/knowledge topic. Thereby, helping students form knowledge, skills and qualities," said Mr. Khoat.
For example, for the 10th grade literature textbook, each lesson is designed according to a form/genre/topic. Each lesson will have the following structure: objectives to be achieved; literature knowledge (providing basic knowledge about the characteristics of the genre/topic); reading (including 1 lesson for teachers to guide students to read, 1 lesson to practice reading skills, 1 self-reading-self-assessment lesson); writing; practicing Vietnamese; speaking and listening. One of the important innovations is to focus on developing 4 skills for students (listening-speaking-reading-writing).
"Thus, when approaching the new program, students need to have a high spirit of self-study and self-discovery. Practicing skills is a task that students must do regularly, especially problem-solving skills, teamwork, and independent thinking," Mr. Khoat shared.
The new 10th grade textbook program requires students to be proactive and creative.
Mr. Khoat also emphasized that students need to be proactive and bold in expressing their own opinions on the issues raised in the lesson and must give up the idea of memorization and learning by heart, and must not expect teachers to "feed" them knowledge.
Advice for anxious candidates waiting for 10th grade scores
For some students who feel pressured and worried while waiting for their 10th grade scores, Mr. Khoat advises: "We cannot change what has happened, so let's actively do our best in the present. In all circumstances, optimism and positivity always bring good things, and can even improve previous mistakes."
In addition, he shared some orientations and opportunities at private schools for students with low results or not enough to enter public high schools. "In case students do not have the interest or motivation to continue studying at high school, they should choose vocational training. Whether continuing, stopping or changing direction, success is determined by the individual's constant efforts to become the best in their profession/career," Mr. Khoat advised.
