Professor Phan Luong Cam, wife of the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet, the first female professor and doctor of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, has just passed away at the age of 82.
From 1965, Prof. Dr. Phan Luong Cam was a lecturer at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. After successfully defending her doctoral thesis in the Soviet Union on Electrochemistry - Metal Corrosion, in early 1973, she returned to Vietnam and continued teaching and researching at the school.

As a former student of Prof. Dr. Phan Luong Cam in the Department of Corrosion and Metal Protection since 1992, and later having her guide her graduation thesis and doctoral thesis, Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Thi Bich Thuy, Head of the Electrochemistry and Energy Storage and Conversion Group (Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology), was impressed by the disciplined, careful, meticulous teacher who always had high demands in her work.
“Because she always demanded perfection and neatness, our generation of students also learned a lot. Later in their work, the generation of students also continued to maintain the discipline she taught,” Associate Professor Dr. Bich Thuy recalled.
After that, Associate Professor Dr. Bich Thuy also had an additional period of time working under Professor Dr. Phan Luong Cam at the Center for Corrosion and Metal Protection Research.
As both a student and a colleague, Associate Professor Dr. Bich Thuy always feels that Professor Dr. Phan Luong Cam is "a very good woman in science ".
She is the founder and Director of the Center for Corrosion and Metal Protection Research, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and is also one of the founders and the first President of the Vietnam Association of Corrosion and Metal Protection Science and Technology. This is also the first time a Vietnam Association of Science and Technology has a female President.
“Our generation of students greatly admire and are grateful for the knowledge, skills, and even work discipline she imparted,” Associate Professor Dr. Bich Thuy said.

Associate Professor Bich Thuy shared that there were not many generations of students who were directly taught by Professor Phan Luong Cam, so the teachers and students were very close. Later, Professor Phan Luong Cam moved to Ho Chi Minh City to live, so the students and the teacher did not have many opportunities to ask each other directly. But even though they lived far away, the teachers and students called each other regularly.
“Every time our students go on a business trip to Ho Chi Minh City, they visit her. The last time we met was on November 20, 2023. Her health was much worse after surgery, but she still tried to meet and have lunch with her students. She was very happy and asked about the 'Corrosion Association', the Electrochemistry - Corrosion brothers and sisters who were her former students. Unexpectedly, that was the last time we met,” Associate Professor Bich Thuy sadly said.
Associate Professor Dr. Bich Thuy said she is always proud to be her student. “Her students have been and are doing well in different positions. Thanks to the 10 years of being her student, along with the 15 years of working under Professor Dr. Phan Luong Cam, I have been trained to become who I am today,” Associate Professor Dr. Bich Thuy shared.
