On the evening of May 31, Mr. Tran Van Rang (73 years old) was on his way to the airport to return to the US when he suddenly fell into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing.
Thanks to the timely discovery of relatives, the patient was quickly taken to the Emergency - Intensive Care Department, Van An General Hospital.
Here, Mr. Rang was found to have complete cardiac arrest, unmeasurable blood pressure, and cyanosis all over his body. The hospital immediately activated the internal red alert and implemented advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation according to AHA standards.
The emergency process encountered many difficulties because the patient had acute pulmonary edema, continuous erythema fluid reflux through the endotracheal tube, and severe metabolic acidosis (pH 6.93).
However, the emergency team persistently performed chest compressions, balloon compression, fluid aspiration, and used vasopressors as prescribed.
After 15 minutes, the patient had a pulse, blood pressure was measurable, SpO₂ reached 95%. The electrocardiogram showed signs of suspected acute myocardial infarction, with a poor prognosis. With professional treatment and adherence to the protocol, the patient's heart rate returned.
The Emergency and Intensive Care Team of Van An General Hospital tried their best to save Mr. Tran Van Rang.
As soon as the emergency was temporarily stable, the patient was consulted with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. A team of specialized doctors and nurses, along with resuscitation equipment, accompanied the patient safely to a higher level.
After being transferred to a higher level and undergoing cardiac MRI, the patient was diagnosed with amyloidosis cardiomyopathy - a rare disease that can cause conduction disturbances and sudden cardiac arrest. This cause is rare and can cause rapid death if not treated properly.
After 18 days of intensive treatment, Mr. Rang was taken off the ventilator, recovered stably and was preparing to be discharged from the hospital.
This case is a clear demonstration of the effective chain of interventions: early detection - correct emergency care - timely transfer to other hospitals - inter-hospital coordination helped the patient to revive spectacularly.
Mr. Tran Van Rang (73 years old) has been taken off the ventilator, is recovering steadily and is preparing to be discharged from the hospital.
“Medical ethics are not on paper, but are imprinted in every revived heartbeat.” The patient’s family expressed their emotions when sending their gratitude to the team at Van An General Hospital.
Through this, Van An General Hospital sends the message: Early detection of signs of circulatory arrest (unconsciousness, apnea, cyanosis) is a key factor in determining survival.
When a patient is found to have the above symptoms, they should be taken to a medical facility with specialized emergency care capabilities, then the survival rate will still be hopeful.
In particular, inter-hospital coordination and early intervention are vital for serious cardiovascular diseases.
The Hospital Board of Directors commended the Emergency and Intensive Care Team of Van An General Hospital for their efforts in successfully resuscitating the patient in cardiac arrest before being taken to the hospital.
To protect public health, in the coming time, Van An General Hospital commits to maintaining and developing cardiovascular emergency capacity, along with a solid team of experts, professional treatment procedures and readiness to cooperate with other hospitals to protect public health.
