In its latest humanitarian situation report for Ethiopia, UNICEF said more than 6,000 schools have been closed across the East African country due to climate shocks and conflicts.
The report also notes that more than 10,000 schools, or 18% of schools nationwide, have been damaged by conflict and climate change, further reducing children’s access to safe and functional learning spaces.
Highlighting the ongoing conflict situation in various parts of Ethiopia, especially in the Amhara and Oromia regions, UNICEF said theeducation sector has been devastated with more than 9 million children currently out of school due to conflict, natural disasters and displacement.
The Ethiopian government often blames “extremist groups” for obstructing vital services, such as education and development initiatives, in areas where armed groups are present.
Meanwhile, UNICEF warned that financial shortfalls are hampering its humanitarian response as relief needs in Ethiopia grow.
"UNICEF continues to call on the international community to support us to ensure that children and caregivers in Ethiopia receive urgent assistance in the coming period," UNICEF said at the end of the report.
