The puppet play “Truong Ba’s Soul, Butcher’s Skin” was staged and released by Meritorious Artist Le Chi Kien and Thang Long Puppetry Theatre in 2016, after 9 years of preparation and overcoming a lot of pressure when many famous directors successfully staged this work with genres such as drama, tuong, cheo, cai luong, etc.
The puppet play with many new creative discoveries in a contemporary atmosphere was highly appreciated by experts and well received by audiences, winning the award for Outstanding Experimental Puppetry Performance at the 3rd International Experimental Theatre Festival in Hanoi .
Not stopping there, once again, with the support of the Board of Directors of Thang Long Puppetry Theater as well as the determination to bring a new breath and a new perspective to the art of puppetry, director Le Chi Kien decided to re-stage the puppet play "Truong Ba's Soul, Butcher's Skin" with bolder ideas. That is, besides human puppets and puppets, the director also brought shadow puppets into the play, lively and attractive.
This time, the puppet play “Truong Ba’s Soul, Butcher’s Skin” was adapted from the script by Meritorious Artist Dang Tien, designed by People’s Artist Doan Bang, created by artist Ngo Thang, choreographed by People’s Artist Le Hong Phong , and directed by artist Le Anh Thuy, who has nearly 40 years of dedication to puppetry art – Meritorious Artist Le Chi Kien.
The director believes that puppetry needs to change to integrate with the times, with today's development trends, especially to be closer to young people. "The Soul of Truong Ba, the Butcher's Skin" version 2025 has a strong contemporary feel when the director uses the language and modern life of young people to tell a familiar story. In addition, music is also an important factor with a smooth combination of traditional materials such as Xam, Hat Cheo, Chau Van, Chau Van combined with modern music such as hip hop, rap...
The stage of the puppet play is quite new, divided into three layers of human puppets, puppets, shadow puppets... This idea comes from the director Le Chi Kien's desire to stage a puppet play with a combination of drama and puppetry. Many performances have also been changed and invested in by director Le Chi Kien to create more highlights.
People's Artist Tran Quoc Chiem, Chairman of the Hanoi Literature and Arts Association, member of the Hanoi City Arts Council, commented: "The work "The Soul of Truong Ba, the Butcher's Skin" by Thang Long Puppetry Theatre brings many new experiences to the audience, and those who work in the theater arts themselves are also very impressed. The puppet play stands out when it successfully applies modern technology, while combining many traditional theater art materials...".
Meritorious Artist Tran Thanh Hien, Director of Thang Long Puppetry Theater, said that the re-staging of the puppet play "Truong Ba's Soul, Butcher's Skin" is part of the Plan to preserve and promote traditional opera art in Hanoi Capital for the period 2021 - 2025 of the Hanoi People's Committee.
The puppet play will be performed at schools across the city, in the school theater program, helping students have deeper, more specific experiences about the literary works studied in the generaleducation program.
