During a friendly meeting at the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, director Nguyen Thu (Giai Phong Film Studio) officially started making a documentary about the late writer - author Ngoc Linh - a special writer who left a deep mark on both the literary world and the Southern theater and reformed opera scene for over half a century.
The film was made from a script by Meritorious Artist Nguyen Mong Long - the son of the late composer Quy Sac, who wrote the famous folk song "The Girl Who Sells Paper Lanterns". The fact that an artist who grew up in a traditional theater environment and has a solid literary background like Meritorious Artist Nguyen Mong Long wrote the script for the film is a clear aesthetic commitment: the film is not just a documentary, but a serious work of artistic creation.
According to journalist Duong Thi Lien Chi - daughter of the late writer - author Ngoc Linh: "My family is very happy that the crew worked very professionally, showing deep affection for my father through this meaningful film."
People's Artist Thoai Mieu and writer Nguyen Thi Minh Ngoc discuss the works of the late writer - author Ngoc Linh
Writer - author Ngoc Linh, from life to writing
The late People's Artist - Director Huynh Nga once commented: "Ngoc Linh's works are always attractive and long-lasting, sometimes over several decades... his novel writing and stage script writing techniques have reached a fairly high level."
This comment was considered by the production team to be the guiding spirit for the documentary – a film that is not simply a biography or career summary, but a process of tracing back the creative undercurrents that have created the durability of his works.
Writer and author Ngoc Linh entered literature with more than 70 novels, then turned to journalism, drama and reformed theater - a rare journey in the art world, not only because of her versatility but also because of the consistent quality between genres. The political novels he wrote deeply reflected the current events, while his works such as: Darkness and Light, Our House, House Without Men, House Without Women, Big Family... showed his flexibility in conveying social messages through the form of folk art.
