According to Antara newspaper, Indonesian sports only set a target of winning 80 gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games. However, they are only really confident of winning 78 and hope to finish 3rd overall.
This can be understood that Indonesia has determined not to compete with Thailand and Vietnam, two sports delegations that set very high goals.
This is a rather modest number for the sports delegation of the archipelago country. In the Southeast Asian region, they are one of the very strong delegations. But the reason why Indonesian sports set this target is not 100% based on actual assessment, but on… technology.
"We have to compare all available data, including potential opponents, competition positions, and athletes' strengths and weaknesses. From these data, applying data technology helps to set appropriate targets," said Mr. Surono, who is in charge of improving sports performance at the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Mr. Surono further revealed that the ministry has set up a discussion group, including representatives of the ministry, experts, and members of the sports committee. They have also invited officials from 52 member sports federations to discuss strategies for the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand.
Each federation submits its medal quota. But the panel then has to do a deeper, more detailed analysis based on the data before making a final decision.
Some individual sports like athletics, weightlifting, and rock climbing are easier to report on. But team sports like soccer, basketball, and volleyball involve so many factors that reporting results based on data is more challenging.
From the data of the discussion group, the Indonesian sports delegation will make a list of athletes participating in the SEA Games based on the opportunity to win medals.
Indonesia is a populous country, so it has an advantage in sports events. They also have a strong sports background, and are the number 1 country in Southeast Asia at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning 2 gold medals and 1 bronze medal.
At the most recent SEA Games in 2023, Indonesia finished third with 87 gold medals. With those achievements, their target of only 80 gold medals this year is quite modest.
Apart from the use of technology, there is another reason for this. At the 33rd SEA Games, many of Indonesia’s strong events were eliminated. Mr. Surono said that Indonesia lost the chance to win about 41 gold medals in these events.
