Inter Milan's glorious journey in the Champions League this season has ended in the most bitter way. Facing an overwhelmingly superior PSG, the black and blue team suffered a heavy 0-5 defeat in the final in Munich, the heaviest defeat in the history of European Cup 1 finals.
It's hard to believe that just a short time ago, Inter Milan pulled off a stunning comeback against Barcelona in the semi-finals, winning 7-6 on aggregate after two thrilling matches. But last night, against a PSG full of spirit and desire, Inter's best moments of the season suddenly disappeared.
“That should not overshadow the season we had,” said president Giuseppe Marotta. “Look at Inter’s journey in the Champions League, where we overcame Feyenoord, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.”
This is the second time in three years that Inter Milan have fallen just one game away from winning the competition, after losing to Manchester City in 2023 in Lisbon.
“The final images have somewhat ruined a great season,” said midfielder Nicolo Barella. “Unfortunately, in life and football, the last thing that happens is often the thing people remember the most.”
And the memory that remains this time is a tired Inter Milan, completely out of sync with PSG. Right from the start of the match, the French team dominated in terms of speed, spirit and accuracy. Inter continuously passed the ball wrong, lost the ball, and lost the concentration that used to be a strong point in big matches.

Former Inter player Achraf Hakimi's opener came as a matter of course. He didn't celebrate, but the stadium erupted with PSG fans.
Then everything fell apart quickly: a double from Desire Doue, a strike from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and a 5-0 winner from Senny Mayulu just three minutes after coming on.
“They were superior in every way: tactically, mentally and with a desire to win. We have to congratulate them,” Barella said. “Sometimes you have to accept reality like this. The important thing is to stand up, unite and bring Inter back to where they deserve to be.”
Inter's best chances came from two Marcus Thuram chances, a header in the first half and a shot that forced Donnarumma to show his talent in the 75th minute. But that was it. There was no miracle, no repeat of the miracle against Barcelona.
“We did not play a good final,” coach Simone Inzaghi admitted after the match. “However, I thanked the players. I am proud to be their coach. This defeat is painful, but it cannot erase what we have done.”
Barella also emphasized: “Reaching two Champions League finals in just three years is not a simple matter. This season's journey has exceeded all expectations. We have had good matches like against Bayern or Barcelona, where heart and spirit were more important than any tactical calculations. Unfortunately, today we lacked that important quality."
Before the match, Inter Milan suffered a great loss when former president Ernesto Pellegrini, who led the club during its golden age at the end of the 20th century, passed away at the age of 84. A deep note in the sad night of Nerazzurri.
