On e-commerce platforms like Pinduoduo and Alibaba, Chinese merchants are running massive discounts on Apple's latest phone models, with some models priced as low as 900 yuan below retail prices.
Previously, analysts noted that the iPhone 15 did not sell as well in China as its predecessor. Counterpoint Research said that after the first 17 days of its launch, sales of Apple's latest phone model were 4.5% lower than the iPhone 14 series.
China is a market where Apple allows partner retailers to cut prices to stimulate demand. However, this year, e-commerce platforms are also facing difficulties, as consumers "tighten their belts" due to the economic slowdown.
"Singles Day", the world's largest online shopping festival, will take place on November 11 and discounts are the focus of promotions for platforms and online sellers in the mainland.
Reuters reported that on the Pinduoduo platform, the 128GB iPhone 15 Plus model is priced at 6,098 yuan, 900 yuan lower than the retail price listed by Apple at 6,999 yuan.
Meanwhile, the 512GB iPhone 15 Pro Max, priced at 11,999 yuan in Apple's store, can be purchased for 10,698 yuan on Alibaba's Taobao.
Previously, in September, Beijing expanded restrictions on the use of Apple iPhones for state employees, requiring civil servants at some central agencies to stop using this smartphone model at work.
