Trump said on March 24 that tariffs on imported cars could be imposed this week, ahead of plans to announce a series of “reciprocal” tariffs next week. Trump and his economic advisers have promised to announce those tariffs, and possibly some additional sectoral tariffs, on April 2.
The US dollar had been on a weaker trend in recent trading sessions, as a report showed durable goods orders unexpectedly rose in February.
The impact of tariffs on the U.S. economy remains unclear, Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Neel Kashkari said on March 26, highlighting the possibility that the tariffs could push prices higher or slow economic growth, leading to calls for lower borrowing costs.
In another development, St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem assessed that the risk of inflation in the US could remain above the Fed's 2% target or even rise higher, as import tariffs could create prolonged price pressures.
