Reuters reported that Israel fired rockets at targets in Syria on April 9 in retaliation for the attack on the Golan Heights.

Earlier, according to Al Mayadeen channel, 6 rockets were launched towards Israel from Syrian territory. No damage or casualties were recorded. Al-Quds Brigade, the armed force of the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Israeli military confirmed that it had fired artillery and launched drones to attack rocket launchers located in Syria. According to the force, in the Al-Quds attack, only 3 rockets flew over Israeli-controlled territory, while 2 rockets fell in open areas and 1 was intercepted by Israeli air defenses.

Israel took control of the Golan Heights after the 1967 Middle East war and annexed the 1,200-square-kilometer area in 1981, a move not recognized by most of the international community.

The exchange of fire came amid clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque. The site is Islam's third holiest site, where tens of thousands of people pray during Ramadan. The mosque has long been a flashpoint for tensions. Clashes there in 2021 sparked a 10-day war between Israel and Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza.

On April 6, more than 30 rockets were fired toward Israel from southern Lebanon. Israel then retaliated by attacking Hamas-affiliated sites in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
