The pop star and actress' comments at Kamala Harris's Las Vegas rally came amid widespread outrage after the pro-Trump comedian called the US territory of Puerto Rico - where Jennifer Lopez's parents were born - a "floating trash island".

"At Madison Square Garden, Mr. Trump reminded us who he is and how he really feels. It wasn't just Puerto Ricans who were offended that day, it was all Latinos in this country," Lopez said of Trump.

Kamala Harris's stop in Las Vegas with Lopez comes on a trip through the fiercely competitive western states of Arizona and Nevada — where CNN polls released earlier this week showed the presidential race extremely tight with no clear front-runner.

Vice President Kamala Harris has enlisted a growing list of celebrities and musicians with large social media followings in the final days of the race, as her campaign seeks to appeal to key constituencies, including Georgia’s black and Latino voters. That list ranges from music legends Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen, who performed at Harris’ Georgia events, to the stars of Marvel’s Avengers , who endorsed the vice president on social media on Oct. 31.

But the most impactful support may come from Puerto Rican stars like Jennifer Lopez. “This is our country too,” Lopez said on the evening of October 31. At times, she had to fight back tears.

"You know what? We should be moved. We should be sad. We should be scared and angry. Our pain matters. Your voice and your vote matters," Lopez continued.

Other Puerto Rican celebrities have also criticized Trump in recent days.

Bad Bunny, one of the world's biggest Latin music stars, shared his support for Ms Harris in Puerto Rico on social media. Music star Nicky Jam, who had earlier appeared on stage with Mr Trump, withdrew his support for the former president, saying: "Puerto Rico should be respected."

Donald Trump has long sought to reach out to black and Latino men. In particular, in the key state of Pennsylvania, a significant portion of the rapidly growing Latino population is of Puerto Rican descent.

On October 31, Ms. Harris’s campaign launched a Spanish-language message to reach Latino voters, highlighting comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s speech at Mr. Trump’s rally.

Tony Hinchcliffe speaks at former President Donald Trump's campaign rally at Madison Square Garden in New York on October 27, 2024.

"Puerto Rico is the island of scientists, poets, educators , stars and heroes. We are not trash, we are more than that," narrator Hinchcliffe says in Spanish.

"This joke does not reflect the views of Donald Trump or the campaign," Trump campaign spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez said in a statement after the rally.

In Las Vegas, Kamala Harris said Trump "is a man who only knows hatred and division." She said if re-elected, he would restore the policy that led to the separation of migrant families at the US-Mexico border.

Lopez repeatedly said Harris "gets it" and said she understands what it means for immigrant families to pursue the American dream, as her parents were immigrants themselves. She also believes "in the power of women."

Polls suggest this year's election could see a gender gap, with a majority of men backing Mr Trump and women backing Harris.

"Women have the power to make a difference in this election," said Jennifer Lopez.
