JICA supports upgrading the irrigation system in North Nghe An

The inauguration ceremony of the project "Restoration and Upgrading of the Northern Nghe An irrigation system" took place recently at the main construction site, Do Luong district, Nghe An province.

Attending the ceremony were Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hiep - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development , Mr. Hoang Nghia Hieu - Deputy Secretary of Nghe An Provincial Party Committee, Mr. Watanabe Shige - Deputy Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam, Ms. Takebayashi Yoko - Deputy Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam Office, and many representatives of relevant agencies.

The project has a loan value of 19,122 million Yen (equivalent to 3,650 billion VND at the time of signing the loan agreement) and will be implemented from 2013 to 2023. Through the project, the Bac Nghe An irrigation system in the four districts of Do Luong, Dien Chau, Yen Thanh and Quynh Luu under Component 1 of the project has been restored and upgraded, ensuring stable irrigation for 28,801 hectares of agricultural land, supplementing water sources for daily life, livestock, industry and serving other purposes. The irrigation training center under the Vietnam Institute of Water Resources in Thach That, Hanoi, built under Component 2 of the project, has helped strengthen the capacity of technical staff and irrigation managers nationwide.

Also within the framework of the Project, the cultivated area and productivity in the project area have increased significantly, flood drainage capacity has been enhanced, inundation has been reduced, the environment has been improved, the impact of drought has been minimized, thereby improving the lives of people in the project area.

The inauguration ceremony of the “Restoration and Upgrading of the Northern Nghe An Irrigation System” Project is one of the important events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan. At the ceremony, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development awarded the Minister’s Certificate of Merit to JICA Vietnam Office for JICA’s contributions to the Industry.
