>> Vu Linh develops community tourism
>> Lavie Vu Linh – a destination that attracts foreign tourists
Formed with the first hydroelectric project in the North during the anti-American period, Thac Ba Lake has now become a "green symbol" of Yen Binh district. With over 1,330 large and small islands scattered in the middle of the lake with a rich flora and fauna system, high value in conservation and development of ecotourism, Thac Ba Lake is a water source, a "lifeblood" of the people living along the lake, a special tourism resource, attracting visitors by its pristine beauty, charming scenery that changes with the seasons.
Every morning, when the mist covers the lake, the sound of oars splashing the vast water creates a magical scene like a watercolor painting. When the afternoon falls, the water surface is as calm as a mirror, reflecting the clouds and sky, the stilt houses, bamboo groves, and bamboo boats gliding gently in the quiet space. Not only is the nature beautiful, Yen Binh is also a land rich in cultural traditions, a long-standing home to more than 20 ethnic minorities.
Among them, the Tay, Dao, Cao Lan... communities still preserve many traditional activities such as Then singing, Tinh lute, Cap Sac ceremony, crop praying festival, farming, brocade weaving, making wine with leaves... In particular, the lakeside villages such as Vu Linh, Han Da, Xuan Lai still preserve many traditional cultural features, becoming a valuable foundation for developing community cultural tourism, helping tourists experience, explore the landscape and deeply understand the lives of the indigenous people.
Comrade Vu Tuan Manh - Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Yen Binh district said: "Closely linking conservation and exploitation, economic development and preservation of cultural identity, the district is gradually affirming itself as a green, cultural and community tourism destination in the Northwest region. Up to now, Yen Binh has built 36 community tourism models, 177 mass art teams of villages, hamlets, residential groups and 18 folk art teams serving tourism".
Among the localities with community tourism models, Vu Linh is one of the first lakeside communes to develop. With 16 households doing community tourism business, 20 houses meeting tourism standards, the commune has formed a community network doing tourism associated with cultural preservation. Households have renovated their stilt houses, learned more skills in welcoming guests, cooking, and telling cultural stories...
Thanks to this, farmers who previously lived mainly on slash-and-burn farming and fishing have found a sustainable livelihood from tourism. Visitors to Vu Linh can visit the lake, explore caves, bathe in streams, and experience eating, living, and working with the locals.
Tourist Tran Anh Tuan from Hanoi shared: "The fresh nature, immense lake, peaceful space, and indigenous cultural values preserved intact by Vu Linh have given me a very different experience. When I experience daily activities with the locals such as fishing and farming, I feel more deeply about the lives of the people here."
Along with developing community tourism, the district places the protection of environmental resources and preservation of cultural identity as top priorities. Yen Binh regularly coordinates to organize training courses on sustainable tourism skills, protecting lake resources, maintaining environmental hygiene, and promoting ethnic culture. Every year, the district organizes many cultural activities associated with tourism such as the Dai Minh Grapefruit Festival and the Boat Racing Festival on Thac Ba Lake.
The festivals are organized in combination with ethnic cultural performances, grapefruit picking competitions, agricultural product displays and lake tourism. In addition, the Dao Quan Chet's Cap Sac festival, the Tay's Then ancient festival, the Xuong Dong festival or seasonal folk art activities are also restored, preserved and widely introduced during holidays and Tet. In the first 4 months of 2025, Yen Binh welcomed over 130,100 visitors, including over 17,300 international visitors; revenue from tourism activities reached 114.6 billion VND.
It can be seen that by harmoniously combining natural resources and indigenous cultural values, taking people as the center of development, Yen Binh district has preserved the soul of the land and people, opened up a new direction for tourism activities and promoted local economic development.
