Following the success of the Tamky Discovery event in 2022, Quang Nam will host the Quang Nam Marathon 2024, expected to attract more than 4,000 participants.

In fact, sports tourism has recently attracted a large number of tourists to Quang Nam and made positive contributions to the industry's overall revenue.

Great potential needs to be unlocked.

Sports tourism is considered an optimal solution to overcome the seasonality of tourism, as well as serving as an effective channel for promoting and advertising destinations.

In addition to cultural products, many new proposals have been put forward to enhance the tourist experience, such as sports tourism associated with golf, running, and water sports related to the sea and islands.

According to the businesses' proposal, long-term research and guidance from local authorities are needed.

Specifically, it is necessary to build and upgrade infrastructure, improve the transportation system, and develop specialized technical facilities in a professional and modern direction. Local authorities should also develop a promotional strategy soon to increase opportunities to host more international-level sporting events.

At the same time, in the sea area, it is necessary to quickly grant operating licenses for certain activities such as parasailing, towed inflatable rafts, underwater walking, sailing, etc., to create conditions for businesses to effectively exploit and develop water-based recreational services.

Furthermore, Quang Nam needs to attract more large-scale sports event organizers to hold events locally. This would allow sports tourism to compete with neighboring provinces like Da Nang and Khanh Hoa.

At the recent tourism stimulus program, Mr. Vo Quang Lien Kha – Deputy General Director of Vietravel – proposed that the Quang Nam Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism reconsider sports tourism products.

Citing a specific example, Mr. Kha said that the motorboat race in Binh Dinh has attracted a large number of domestic and international tourists to the locality.

"Quang Nam needs to consider organizing national and then international golf tournaments. Currently, sports tourism products are developing positively, and Quang Nam can develop this sector well as golf and resort products in the locality are thriving."

"Given Hoi An's established brand, the tourism industry should consider bringing major events to the city, thereby forming an international tourism center as planned," Mr. Kha suggested.

Increase competitive advantage

Ms. Pham Que Anh, Director of Hoi An Express Trading and Tourism Service Company Limited, believes that Cam An ward (Hoi An city) has many advantages for developing new products.

According to Ms. Anh, this area has a favorable geographical location, pristine natural scenery, and has received support from the province and local authorities in terms of policies for developing coastal tourism.

"However, the area currently lacks uniformity in conditions geared towards green tourism (waste recycling, reducing plastic use), and there are no well-organized water sports activities. Therefore, Hoi An should propose that the province consider planning and re-implementing water sports activities soon," Ms. Que Anh said.

From a local management perspective, Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoi An City, said that one enterprise has been granted permission to organize sports activities in the "dinosaur island" area.

According to Mr. Son, this enterprise will play a role in organizing services as well as providing rescue support when needed. Sports activities will take place during the summer months and be temporarily suspended during the winter months with unfavorable weather. This will diversify tourism products for the locality and reduce congestion in the core heritage area of Hoi An Ancient Town.

Regarding the development of golf tourism, Mr. Pham Thanh Tri, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Golf Tourism Association (VTGA), believes that travel companies have not yet shown sufficient interest in this area. Furthermore, the tourism workforce has not been professionally trained to connect the Central Vietnam tourism industry with golf.

According to Mr. Tri, businesses need to proactively train human resources for golf tourism to meet the growing demand from both international and domestic golf tourists.

At the same time, communication should be strengthened so that state management agencies and the public understand that golf is a sport and an economic sector that exports on-site services such as golf playing, dining, and sightseeing for international golf tourists.

Policies that encourage the development of sports activities linked to tourism are something we need to consider...
