Experience in organic vegetable village

Mr. Le Nhuong, Director of Thanh Dong Organic Vegetable and Tourism Cooperative (Hoi An Dong ward) said that in 2024, the number of international visitors to the organic vegetable village will reach nearly 1,700, and domestic visitors will reach nearly 900.

Since the beginning of the year, the number of international visitors to the organic vegetable village has been approximately 2,000; domestic visitors more than 1,000. “I am very happy when tourists come to learn, explore, and research about the life, customs, habits, and cultural identity of the community participating in organic farming ,” said Mr. Nhuong.

Present at Thanh Dong organic vegetable garden very early, Ms. Barbara Gerard (Irish nationality) said that agricultural activities in Northern Europe mainly include growing wheat, potatoes and raising sheep, so she was interested in learning about how to till the soil, use water, farming techniques... about growing organic vegetables.

“I really admire the love of the farmers here. They work all day in the sun. They not only plant trees, but also create life and vitality for the plants,” said Barbara Gerard.

Thanh Dong organic vegetable village community has 11 farming households cooperating to grow organic vegetables. Mr. Gerard McNamara (Irish nationality) walked through the Thanh Dong vegetable garden of more than 1,000 square meters, enjoying his experience and discovery . He said that Thanh Dong farmers are very hard-working and diligent.

The way farmers catch worms and repel harmful insects leaves many lessons about protecting the fruits of labor, creativity, and especially love for nature. “Farmers here have helped me understand that, in the context of climate change and environmental pollution, organic agriculture is an inevitable direction to save resources, reduce costs, protect the environment and bring interesting sightseeing moments to tourists,” said Mr. Gerard McNamara.

Combining clean vegetable farming with tourism is gradually becoming a trend in Da Nang city. Tra Que vegetable village (Hoi An Tay ward) is a national intangible cultural heritage, and was honored to be in the Top 10 most attractive destinations in Vietnam voted by the French daily Le Figaro.

This place is famous for its clean vegetable growing craft village and is a destination that attracts domestic and international tourists. Tra Que vegetable village currently has more than 200 households growing clean vegetables on an area of nearly 20 hectares with a stable income from selling vegetables and serving tourism.

Great room for extensive development

Sustainable agricultural production combined with tourism is creating breakthrough innovations. In Thang An commune, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said that recently, the locality has had many models of clean agricultural economic development combined with tourism, especially in large-scale tourist areas. This is a direction with great potential because the locality has a large space for extensive development.

“We can take advantage of the existing space to develop clean agriculture associated with experiential tourism. Tourists have come and loved branded agricultural craft villages such as clean vegetables in Binh Trieu, organic vegetables in Binh Dao, Binh Giang. Binh Duong and Binh Minh areas also have large areas and clean agricultural production conditions to promote development,” said Mr. Phong.

After the merger, with the increase in agricultural land area, Da Nang city has great room to promote organic green agricultural production, clean and circular agriculture associated with eco-tourism and experiential tourism.

Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Tran Nam Hung said that the agricultural sector and the tourism sector need to "match" each other to cooperate more closely. Sustainable agricultural production is not only about safe, clean, green production to sell agricultural products for profit, but also about exploiting those values to create unique agricultural tourism products to attract tourists. Clean agricultural producers need to have a promotion strategy to create leverage for clean agriculture associated with experiential tourism.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) predicts that agricultural and rural tourism will become a strong growth segment in the coming time. It is expected that by 2030, the number of clean agricultural tourists globally will account for 10% with revenue of about 30 billion USD, growing annually by 10-30%. Meanwhile, traditional tourism types only grow on average 4%/year.

Obviously, taking advantage of inherent advantages, combining clean agriculture with tourism will be the driving force for the city's socio-economic development in the coming time. The Department of Agriculture and Environment said that the functional sector will continue to advise the City People's Committee to issue mechanisms and policies to encourage and support the development of clean agriculture associated with tourism for sustainable development.
