Chris and Steph are two tourists from Canada, on a journey around the world . They own a YouTube channel with more than 255,000 followers, recording unique culinary experiences in different countries.
Recently, the couple shared a series of videos enjoying specialties in Ho Chi Minh City such as beefsteak, broken rice, beef pho... In particular, they spent 1 day experiencing 9 banh mi shops, with prices ranging from 15,000-75,000 VND/piece.
The cheapest bread on the "bread tour"
The couple started their journey with an egg sandwich from "Ba Cu's sandwich" on Mac Dinh Chi. This is just a sandwich stall on the sidewalk owned by an elderly owner. The sandwich is spread with pate, butter, cucumber, pickled radish and carrots, herbs, soy sauce and 2 hot fried eggs.

While enjoying the dish, the male tourist kept nodding his head in approval because of the rich flavor of the egg, pate, combined with the crispy crust. He said the dish was only 15,000 VND but quite large, still filling enough to start a new day.
Bread with strange fillings, never tried
During the trip, the two tourists tried many different types of sandwiches, such as pan-fried sandwiches, grilled meat sandwiches, Turkish-style roast meat sandwiches, offal sandwiches, hamburgers with fried chicken...
One dish they had never tasted before was the Banh Mi Pha Lau, a filling of stewed pig intestines, heart, ears, and nose with rich spices. The owner poured a thick broth with the aroma of coconut and star anise over the filling.

Chris introduced this as a special sandwich in Ho Chi Minh City. "The sauce is rich and creamy. The organs have no foul smell at all. The price of the sandwich is 25,000 VND," said the male tourist.

Also a meat sandwich, Banh Mi 37 on Nguyen Trai uses charcoal-grilled meatballs, which are then inserted into the sandwich as they are grilled. This flavor surprised the two Canadian guests.
Banh mi 37 is a small sandwich cart that was once praised in the American magazine Condé Nast Traveler . The grilled meatballs are made from minced pork, mixed with spices and marinated in a sauce according to the owner's own recipe.
In addition to meatballs, the filling will also have pickled vegetables, sweet and salty brown sauce and chili fish sauce, which enhances the meat flavor and makes it more attractive and fragrant.

Seeing the grilled meat, Steph immediately wanted to try it. "The meat was juicy, tender, and had a pleasant sweet taste. The cilantro and cucumber added a refreshing touch. The dark brown sauce was delicious, and the bread tasted perfect," the female tourist commented.

The "giant" cake
Huynh Hoa Bread (also known as Huynh Hoa Bread), in Pham Ngu Lao, is considered one of the most famous bread shops in Ho Chi Minh City, and has been suggested many times as a must-visit destination by international media.
This bakery is also involved in many controversies related to expensive prices, brand separation and has become a hot topic of discussion on social networks. However, amidst the controversies, Huynh Hoa bread is always crowded with customers.
Chris and Steph were excited to try it because they heard it was a giant sandwich.

The bread is heated until crispy in the oven before adding a variety of fillings: pate, shredded pork, sausage, ham, char siu with pork... Inside the bread there are a total of 13 different fillings.
"The bread looks so delicious with its huge filling. This is truly a giant bread," the couple commented.

From the first bite, they were impressed by the rich pate. The other ingredients also combined perfectly. This sandwich shop has long been praised for its rich, delicious pate, with a shiny, pink-red surface.
"This is the biggest sandwich I have ever seen and enjoyed, it is as big as 3-4 regular sandwiches," the couple said, adding that the price of the sandwich they enjoyed was 73,000 VND.

In one day, the couple enjoyed 9 different banh mi shops in Ho Chi Minh City. Both commented that they were most impressed with Ba Cu's egg banh mi, even though it was cheap and simple. The second type of banh mi they loved was Huynh Hoa banh mi.
"We hope this bread experience journey can help people see the diversity and creativity of bread in particular and Vietnamese cuisine in general," Chris and Steph shared.
