Meanwhile, Thai tourism officials are making efforts to attract tourists from a number of other countries and regions.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pushing for a target of 150,000 Saudi tourists. There has been a significant increase in the number of Saudi tourists visiting the Land of Smiles over the years. In 2015, Thailand welcomed 25,153 Saudi tourists, while in 2016 and 2017, the figures increased to 33,038 and 42,610, respectively.
TAT also expects to welcome 6 million tourists from Europe this year, targeting revenue of more than 420 billion baht, equivalent to 80% compared to the year before the pandemic.
Last month, TAT Deputy Director General for Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas said that long-haul flight bookings for the summer season had reached 70% compared to 2019, after a 60% recovery in flights for the current season.
TAT is rolling out a number of initiatives to attract tourists with diverse interests. It recently launched a new campaign to promote Thailand’s lesser-known destinations. It has also launched a new culinary programme to attract foodies to the country.
Thailand is expected to welcome 28 million international tourists in 2023, more than any other country in Southeast Asia.
